Job was born in Tideswell about 1770, the son of Samuel and Grace ⁽¹⁾. He had a elder brother Joseph ⁽²⁾, and his sister Nancy was born in 1772 ⁽³⁾, but she only lived till 1786 ⁽⁴⁾. He initially became a lead miner like the majority of his family before him ⁽⁵⁾.

He married Hannah Lomas in Tideswell church on 27th June 1791 ⁽⁵⁾, and their eldest son Henry was born about 6 months later ⁽⁶⁾. They had a daughter Mary in 1793 ⁽⁷⁾, then another son Joseph in 1795 ⁽⁸⁾, but he died around his second birthday ⁽⁹⁾. Next came three more daughters - Ann in 1797 ⁽¹⁰⁾, Martha in 1799 ⁽¹¹⁾ and Hannah in 1802 ⁽¹²⁾.

Job's mother died in the spring of 1803 ⁽¹³⁾, then he had two more sons - Samuel later that year ⁽¹⁴⁾, and Joseph in 1805 ⁽¹⁵⁾. His father died in 1806 ⁽¹⁶⁾, and Job and his brother Joseph inherited everything ⁽¹⁷⁾. His youngest children were two more daughters - Emmet in 1807 ⁽¹⁸⁾, and finally Sally in 1809 ⁽¹⁹⁾.

His wife died in 1811 ⁽²⁰⁾. Nothing else is known of Job until the 1841 census ⁽²¹⁾, by which time he was a farmer living in Town End with his unmarried son Henry, and his daughter Emmet/Emmma and her husband and children. He died of dropsy on 12th October 1842, aged 73 ⁽²²⁾, and was buried in Tideswell 3 days later ⁽²³⁾.

Brief details of his children:

Henry was born in Tideswell in 1791. Littl eis known of him, but he doesn't appear to have married, and lived with his father right up until his father's death when Henry was 51. He worked as a Higler, and died in 1855.

Mary was born in Tideswell in 1793. Nothing more is known of her.

Joseph was born in Tideswell in 1795, and died there about 2 years later.

Ann was born in Tideswell in 1797. Nothing more is known of her.

Martha was born in Tideswell in 1799. She had an illegitimate daughter named Esther Diana in 1821, but nothing more is known of her.

Hannah was born in Tideswell in 1802. She never married, and died aged 25 in 1828.

Joseph was born in Tideswell in 1805. He married a woman called Fanny (probably Frances Dawson, born Tideswell in 1799). They were together for about 40 years, but didn't have any children. Joseph was variously described as a higler, then hay dealer and finally farmer. He died aged 68 in 1874.
Emmet was born in Tideswell in 1807. She had an illegitimate son Henry in 1826, then married Joseph Longstone later the same year. She and Joseph had children Marianne, Hannah, Ann, Francis, Joseph, Esther, Samuel, Job, Martha, John & Sarah. She died aged 74 in 1882.
Sally was born in 1809 in Tideswell. She went by the name Sarah when she grew up. She married William Kirk in Manchester in 1827, and they initially settled in Tideswell where their first seven children - Benjamin Joseph, Martha, Mary Ann, Marina, Elizabeth, John & William - were born. Somewhere around 1838-40 they moved to Salford, where their next son Roger was born in early 1841. By June that year they had changed surname from Kirk to Hillkirk, and their next four children - Hannah, Sarah, Emma & Henry - were given that surname at birth. The reason for the name change is unknown. She died in 1865.

In the name of God Amen I Samuel Swindell of Tideswell
in the County of Derby, Miner, being weak in body but of sound
and disposing mind, memory, and understanding (praised be
God) do make, publish, and declare this my last will and
testament in manner and form following; (that is to say)
First I will order and direct that my just debts, funeral charges,
and the expenses of the robate of this my will be first paid off
and discharged by my Executors herein after named as soon as
conveniently can be after my decease. Item I give and devise unto my
two sons Joseph Swindell and Job Swindell to be equally divided
betwixt them share and share alike, all and every my Messuages,
Lands, Tenements, and Hereditaments whatsoever, and wheresoever,
and of what nature, tenure or kind soever, both freehold and copyhold
(the copyhold part thereof having been duly surrendered to the case
of my last will and testament) together with their and every of
their rights, members, privileges, and appurtenances, and of what
nature, tenure or kind soever of which I die possessed of, or
entitled unto either in possession, reversion, remainder, or expectancy,
togerther with their and every of their rights, members, privileges, and
appurtenances, and also all and singulr my Mines and Groves,
share and shares of Mines and Groves whatsoever, and wheresoever
with all and singular the tools, and implements, and things thereunto
severally and respectively belonging To hold all and singular the
hereditaments and premises aforesaid with their and every of their
appurtenances, unto them the said Joseph Swindell and Job Swindell
their heirs and assigns for ever, as tenants in common and not as
joint tenants. Item I give and bequeath unto the said Joseph Swindell
and Job Swindell all and every part of my household goods, and also
all my live stock as sheep, kine; book debts, mortgages, bonds, note and
notes of hand and the money due, or to become due thereon, and also
my other personal astate and effects whatsoever and wheresoever and
of what nature or kind soever; to be equally shared and divided by and
between them (if they shall so think fit and proper) for his and their
own joint and seperate use and benefit; And as I rent a farm under
M^rs Charlton I wish my two sons to enjoy it equally betwixt them
And lastly I do hereby nominate, constitute and appoint my two
sons Joseph Swindell and Job Swindell joint Executors of this my last
will and testament hereby revoking all former and other will and wills
by me heretofore made, and declaring this to be my last; In witness
whereof I the said Samuel Swindell the Testator, have to this my last
will and testament contained in two sheets of paper, to the first sheet
thereof set my hand, and to this second and last sheet thereof set my
hand and seal the twenty second day of October in the year of our Lord
One Thousand eight hundred and three.
