Robert Bramwell

died 1751

The earliest mention of Robert so far found, is when he married Ann Outfield at St Peter's in Hope, on 30th September 1731 ⁽¹⁾. By the autumn of 1734, if not before, they were living at Windmill, where their son John was born ⁽²⁾. They had two more sons - William in 1736 ⁽³⁾ and Robert probably in 1738 ⁽⁹⁾, then two daughters, Elizabeth in 1741 ⁽⁴⁾, and finally Mary in 1743 ⁽⁵⁾. Mary died before reaching the age of two ⁽⁶⁾.

Robert died in Windmill in March 1751, and was buried in Tideswell ⁽⁷⁾. (Windmill was officially in the parish of Hope, but is considerably nearer to Tideswell than to Hope village itself, which probably explains why all his children were baptized there too). His wife survived him by nearly 18 years ⁽⁸⁾. Robert appears to have been the progenitor of all the Windmill Bramwells.

• John was born in Windmill in 1734. He married a woman called Ann sometime before 1768. They lived in Windmill and had twelve children, starting with Joseph in 1768, Nancy 1769, John 1771, Robert 1773, Isaac 1775 (died as a baby), William 1776, Benjamin 1778, Francis 1780 (who went on to marry his cousin once removed, Martha, the grandaughter of his father's brother William), Elizabeth 1782, James 1784 (died as an infant), and Thomas 1786. They also had a daughter Ann who died in 1799, but her date of birth is not known. John died in 1794, followed by his widow in 1798.

• Robert was born about 1738 in Windmill. He married Elizabeth Marsden in 1764 and they settled in Windmill where they had a son John in 1766, but he died in 1781. Robert died in 1801, and was buried in Tideswell. His wife survived until 1816.
• Elizabeth was born in Windmill in 1741, nothing more is known of her.
• Mary was born in Windmill in 1743, but died in 1745.

9. I have not found a baptism for a son Robert (called junior here for clarity), however I believe the available evidence points to there being one.
   • Robert (called senior here for clarity) was the first known Bramwell to live in Windmill, and is the ancestor of all later Bramwells there (except possibly Robert junior)
   • Robert was a very common name amongst Robert senior's descendants, so it is quite likely that he would have also had a son of that name.
   • Robert junior was living in Windmill at the time of his son John's baptism in 1766 and burial in 1781, and was still living there at his own burial in 1801. His widow was also still living there at the time of her death in 1816.
   • Robert junior got married in 1764 to a woman born about 1744, which would imply that he was probably born somewhere around the time that Robert senior was having his children. Robert senior's other known children were born in 1734, 1736, 1741 and 1743 - there is a noticeable gap between 1736 and 1741.
   • Tideswell parish register lists the baptism of Robert, son of Robert BLACKWELL of Windmill on 8/9/1738. However, there is no other sign of a Robert BLACKWELL of child bearing age living in Windmill anywhere around that time.
   • Hence my conclusion is that the baptism of Robert BRAMWELL was erroneously entered into the parish register as Robert BLACKWELL, and he was indeed the son of Robert senior.
