Joseph was born in Tideswell, and baptized there on New Years Eve 1811, the eldest son on Thomas and Tabitha Gilbert (1). His brother Mellor was born about 2½ years later (2), then a sister Jane about 3 years after that (3), although Jane only survived a year (4). Another brother, John was born when Joseph was 7 (5), and then a sister Marianne when he was 10 (6). Unfortunately Marianne only survived for about a year like Jane before her (7). Three more brothers followed - Ralph when he was 12 (8), Francis when he was 16 (9), and Samuel when he was 18 (10). Finally, his youngest sibling, Martha, a sister that survived, was born when he was 22 (11).
Just like his father before him, Joseph worked as a weaver (13). He married Ann Cartledge, also from Tideswell, on 30th Marth 1837 (12). Their only child, a daughter Mary, was born just a few months later (13), and they initially lived with Ann's parents on Manchester Road (14). At about this time Joseph ceased weaving and eventually became a lead miner (14)(15).
By the time of the 1851 census they had moved out and were living on Back Lane (15). In 1856, their daughter Mary got married (16), and her new husband, George Jackson, moved into the house with them (18). By the time of the 1861 census (just after Joseph's mother had died (17)), they had moved once again, to Wheston Bank. Mary and her husband were still living them, along with their three children (18).
Joseph died on 26th March 1866 (19), and was buried in Tideswell four days later (20). His wife survived him by 8 years (21).
