John Hodgkinson

1662 - 1740

John was probably born in Over Haddon ⁽¹⁾ in January 1662 ⁽²⁾, the son of William and Margaret. He had an older sister Grace ⁽³⁾, and an older brother Francis ⁽⁴⁾. His mother died when he was just turned two ⁽⁵⁾, and his brother later the same year ⁽⁶⁾.

Nothing more is known of him for over twenty years, other than that he married a woman called Grace ^(7)(8)(9). and their first daughter Margaret was born in 1687 ⁽⁷⁾. They had another daughter Martha in 1690 ⁽⁸⁾, and a son William in 1694 ⁽⁹⁾. Unfortunately his wife died the following summer ⁽¹⁰⁾.

Sometime over the next couple of years he appears to have married a woman called Margaret ⁽²⁴⁾, and their first child was Joshua, born around 1698 ⁽¹¹⁾. There then seems to have been a gap before their next son Francis was born in 1707 ⁽¹²⁾, then daughters Martha in 1710 ⁽¹³⁾, Rebeckah in 1712 ⁽¹⁴⁾, and Grace in 1716 ⁽¹⁵⁾, before his son Francis died the following year ⁽¹⁶⁾. He had a son Henry in 1719 ⁽¹⁷⁾, but he only lived for just under a year ⁽¹⁸⁾, as did his youngest son, Charles ^(19)(20).

His wife Margaret died in March 1727 ⁽²¹⁾, followed a month later by his daughter Martha ⁽²²⁾, and a just under year after that by his daughter Rebeckah ⁽²³⁾. John appears to have moved to Chelmorton towards the end of his life ⁽²⁵⁾, probably to live with his son William. He died there in March 1740 ⁽²⁶⁾.

• Martha was born in Over Haddon in 1690. Nothing more is known of her, but she is assumed to have died prior to the birth of her half sister of the same name.

• Martha was born in Over Haddon in 1710. She died aged 17.

• Grace was born in Over Haddon in 1716. Nothing more is known of her.
• Henry was born in Over Haddon in 1719. He died shortly before his first birthday.
• Charles was born in Over Haddon in 1722. He also died shortly before his first birthday.

By assuming that John the widower of Grace, is the same John that started having children with Margaret a couple of years later, this leads to the conclusion that he was considerably older than his second wife, and that he fathered his last child at the age of about 60. Whilst this is out of the ordinary, it is by no means impossible, and as there were absolutely no other "candidate Johns" known to be living in the area at the time, it is the only presently viable hypothesis.
25. There is no burial of a John Hodgkinson in the Bakewell parish register, but there is an unaccounted for one in Chelmorton ⁽²⁶⁾, where his son William lived, so that is most likely this John.
26. Chelmorton Parish Register lists the burial of "John Hodkinson of Chelmorton", on 5th March 1740.
