Sarah Bocking

1811 - 1840

Sarah was born in Abney in 1811, the daughter of Joseph and Ann, and baptised in Hope on 28th March ⁽¹⁾. She had older sisters Mary, Hannah and Elizabeth (three other siblings, Joesph and two unknown, has already died before she was born) ⁽²⁾. A younger brother Thomas was born just before her third birthday ⁽³⁾.

Her mother died in 1828 ⁽⁴⁾.

In 1830 she moved to Little Hucklow, when she married John Jackson from there on 15th November ⁽⁵⁾. Their daughter Ann was born just a few months later ⁽⁶⁾, followed by son George in 1832 ⁽⁷⁾, and youngest daughter Elizabeth in 1834 ⁽⁸⁾.

Her father died in Jun 1838 ⁽⁹⁾, leaving Sarah £8 in his will ⁽¹⁰⁾.

Sarah died, aged just 29, on 26th November 1840 ⁽¹¹⁾, and was buried in Hope 3 days later ⁽¹²⁾. Her husband survived her by just another 2 years ⁽¹³⁾

• Ann was born in Little Hucklow in 1831. Nothing is known of her after 1841, and she appears likely to have died over the next decade.

• Mary was born in Little Hucklow in 1834. Following the death of her parents, she went to live with her uncle, Thomas Jackson, in Tideswell. Nothing is known of her after 1851.

    Note: The death appears to have been registered 14 months after it happened. The registrar at Bakewell assures me the death is definitely recorded as 1840, and the registration definitely took place as 1842. She said that she imagined the death must have really been 1841, but this cannot be the case as the burial was in 1840 ⁽¹²⁾, and she doesn't appear in the 1841 census. There must have been some reason for the excessive delay in registering the death, but we're unlikely to find out what it was.
