Isaac Goodwin was born about 1805 in Stockport (1)(16)(17)(19), the son of Isaac and Kezia . He had a sister Mary about 5 years his senior, and brother George and James about 13 & 3 years respectively older. His younger brother Thomas was born about 1807, then sometime over the next few years the family moved to Monyash (where his father had originated from) (1), where his sister Maria was born in 1813 (2). Its possible he had more siblings than this, but they have not yet been found.
His mother died in the summer of 1826 (3), but then just 3 months later, Isaac married Hannah Harrison (4). They settled in Monyash where Isaac worked in lead mining (6)(10)(11)(12)(13)(14), and their first child, a daughter Harriet, was born the following year (5), and then a son George in 1829 (6) - however George only survived for a few weeks (7). Another son, William, was born in 1831 (8), then another daughter, Kezia, in 1833 (9).
Later that year Isaac was caught up in a unfortunate dispute. He worked at Magpie Mine in Sheldon, and there had been long running antagonism between the men of this mine, and an adjacent mine called Red Soil. The workings of the two mines had met underground, with the predicatble result that each side claimed the other was encroaching on their ore. This came to a head in September that year when a fire was started by men in Magpie Mine, and three men from Red Soil Mine were killed. Isaac was one of twenty plus men charged with their murder. He was eventually acquitted at the Lent Assizes the following March (10).
Life seems to have returned to normal, and his next daughter Charlotte was born in 1835 (11). Next came two more sons - Isaac in about 1838 (13)(16), and Reuben two years after that (12), then finally two more daughters - Hannah in 1842 (14) and Ellen in 1845 (16)(17).
Isaac's father died in 1850 (15). Sometime prior to the census of 1851, Isaac an family moved to Cressbrook, where he ceased to be a miner, and became an agricultural labourer (16). By the next census of 1861 he was described as a general labourer (17), and by the time his daughter Hannah got married in 1866 he was a warehouseman (18), almost certainly at the Cressbrook Mill. He was still working at the mill at the 1871 census, when he was a "bobbin locker" (19). He died soon after on 13th February 1872 (20)(24), and was buried back at the ancestral home in Monyash four days later (21). His wife survived him by 9 years (22)(23)(24).
