Matthew's mother died when he was just 8 (4). Matthew took up the same work as his father - framework knitting (7)(9)(10)etc.. His father died when he was 25 (5).
Sometime in the mid 1830's, he married a woman called Louisa, but she died aged just 21, in the spring of 1837 (6).
It didn't take Matthew long to find himself another wife, and he married Elizabeth Jones at St John the Baptist's in Tideswell, on 7th June 1838 (7). They set up home in Litton, and their first child Mary Jane, was born the following year (8). At the time of the census in June 1841, they are shown to have James Hibbert, who is presumably a lodger, living with them (9). They had a son Robert later that year (10), Their youngest son William was born in about 1850 (11).
At the time of the 1851 census (11), Matthew's nephew George Bingham (son of his brother Thomas), was lodging with the family, and he was still there 10 years later, when the census was next taken in 1861 (12).
Matthew died following a stroke on 15th February 1869 (13). Elizabeth survived him by almost quarter of a century (14).
