Matthew Bingham

1802 - 1869

Matthew was born in Litton in 1802 ⁽¹⁾, the son of Elias, a framework knitter ⁽⁷⁾, and Elizabeth. He had an older brother Thomas, and an older sister Sarah. ⁽²⁾. The last of his siblngs, Elizabeth, was born when he was three ⁽³⁾.

Matthew's mother died when he was just 8 ⁽⁴⁾. Matthew took up the same work as his father - framework knitting ^{(7)(9)(10)etc.}. His father died when he was 25 ⁽⁵⁾.

Sometime in the mid 1830's, he married a woman called Louisa, but she died aged just 21, in the spring of 1837 ⁽⁶⁾.

It didn't take Matthew long to find himself another wife, and he married Elizabeth Jones at St John the Baptist's in Tideswell, on 7th June 1838 ⁽⁷⁾. They set up home in Litton, and their first child Mary Jane, was born the following year ⁽⁸⁾. At the time of the census in June 1841, they are shown to have James Hibbert, who is presumably a lodger, living with them ⁽⁹⁾. They had a son Robert later that year ⁽¹⁰⁾, Their youngest son William was born in about 1850 ⁽¹¹⁾.

At the time of the 1851 census ⁽¹¹⁾, Matthew's nephew George Bingham (son of his brother Thomas), was lodging with the family, and he was still there 10 years later, when the census was next taken in 1861 ⁽¹²⁾.

Matthew died following a stroke on 15th February 1869 ⁽¹³⁾. Elizabeth survived him by almost quarter of a century ⁽¹⁴⁾.

• Mary Jane was born in Litton in 1839. Prior to marriage she was a winder in a cotton mill. She married Samuel Smith from Ashford, and they lived in Litton. They never had any children, and both worked as framework knitters, stocking seamers etc, up until the 1901 census when Samuel was working in a limestone quarry. Nothing is known of them after 1901.

• William was born in Litton in 1850. As a youth he worked as a cotton mill hand, then sometime in the 1870s he moved to Ashton under Lyne and married a woman called Esther. His widowed mother lived with them, and his brother Robert just next door. They had 6 children - Mary Ellen, William, Samuel, Ethel, John Wentworth & Esther. In the 1890s William and his family moved back to Litton, where he gave up cotton work and went to work in a limestone quarry. Nothing is known of him after 1901.
