1823 - 1859
| Father | Robert Bramwell |
| Mother | Esther Ann Walker |
| Wife | Amelia Flint |
| Children | Nancy, Hannah (?) |
George was born in Tideswell around the summer of 1823 (1), the eldest son of Robert and Esther Ann, and baptised at St John the Baptist's there on 22nd August that same year (2). He had two elder sisters, Nancy who was about three years old (3), and Mary who was one (4), however Mary died the following April (5). His brother Thomas was born about in 1825 (6), his sister Amy in 1826 (7), brother William around the turn of 1828-29 (8), youngest sister Sarah in 1831 (9), brother Robert in 1833 (10), and finally youngest brother James in 1838 (11).
By the census of June 1841 (13) his sister Amy had left home, but the rest of his siblings were still living with George and his parents in Tideswell - in the cottage between the Vicarge and Eccles Hall (12). Although not stated in the census, George was probably working as an apprentice joiner for his father, as by the time of his marriage a couple of years later he was calling himself a joiner (14).
He married Amelia Flint from Cressbrook on 15th August 1843 (14), but its impossible to know how much of a success the marriage ever was. Their daughter Nancy was born just 12 days later in Cressbrook (15), likely at Amelia's parents' house. It has to be assumed that George lived with his wife and new baby for a while at least, but there were no more children born, and by the following census of March 1851, he was back living with his mother in Tideswell (16) (his father having died 4 years earlier (17)). His mother died too, in July 1853 (18). His (estranged?) wife got pregnant again towards the end of 1856, and even though George is named as the child Hannah's father at her baptism (19), I strongly suspect he wasn't (20).
George died of consumption, aged just 35, on 2nd May 1859 (21). His wife survived him by 38 years, and the description of her as the widow of a "Joiner Journeyman" on her death certificate (22), may be a final allusion to the fact that they hadn't lived together.
