Nothing is known of Samuel's early life. He married a woman called Martha and they set up home in Litton. Their first (known) son, George, was born there in 1747 (1), followed by a daughter, Elizabeth, in 1750 (2). Their son George died in 1752 (3), and then they had twin sons, another George, and Joseph, in 1753 (4). For the second time, their son George died young, this time at only about a week or so old (5). Their youngest child, Mary, was born in 1755 (6), but she too died young in 1758 (7).
His wife, Martha, died in 1765 (8). Five years later, by which time Samuel was described as a farmer, remarried the widow Anne Howe (9). Samuel died in 1778, and was buried in Tideswell on 5th August (10). His widow, Anne, survived him by 13 years (11).
Brief details of his children:
- George was born in Litton in 1747. He died there aged just 5.

Her husband George died in 1776, and later the same year she remarried, to John Gregory of Peak Forest. They continued to live in Litton where they had two sons, John and Anthony. Elizabeth died aged just 34 in 1784.
- George, and his twin bother Joseph, were born in Litton in 1753. He died just a few days later.
- Joseph has his own page.
