Edward Bocking

1715 - 1801

Edward was born in Tideswell in 1715, the son of Ottiwell and Emma ⁽¹⁾. He had older brothers John and Robert, and an older sister Elizabeth ⁽²⁾. A younger brother Ralph was born in 1721 ⁽³⁾, but died two years later ⁽⁴⁾, just a month before their father ⁽⁵⁾.

Edward's uncle Henry died in 1739 and, having no children of his own, left the majority of his estate to his dead brother Ottiwell's children, and to Edward in particular, who inherited a number of small parcels of land in and around Tideswell ⁽⁶⁾.

He married Martha Oldfield on 25th August 1743 ⁽⁷⁾. Their first child Martha was born a year or so later ⁽⁸⁾, followed by a son Henry in 1747 ⁽⁹⁾, but he died the following month ⁽¹⁰⁾. A second daughter Elizabeth was born in 1748 ⁽¹¹⁾, then another son who died in infancy, Abraham, in 1752^(12)(13). Two more daughters, Hannah, Martha and Mary, followed in 1753 ⁽¹⁴⁾, 1756 ⁽¹⁵⁾ and 1759 ⁽¹⁶⁾ respectively, before another son John in 1762 ⁽¹⁷⁾, who again died young ⁽¹⁸⁾. His youngest daughter Nancy was born in 1765 ⁽¹⁹⁾, His daughter Elizabeth died in 1766 ⁽²⁰⁾, then finally in 1769 they had twin sons John and Edward ⁽²¹⁾, who died within a few days of each other 9 months later ^(22)(23).

His wife died in 1795 ⁽²⁴⁾. Probably thinking his own death was near, Edward wrote his will in 1797 ⁽²⁵⁾, but then went on to live for another four years, dying in 1801. He was buried in Tideswell on 13th December ⁽²⁶⁾.

• Mary was born in 1744. Nothing more is known of her, but she must have died before her namesake younger sister was baptised in 1759.
• Henry was born in 1747, but only lived a few days.
• Elizabeth was born in 1748. She died aged 17.
• Abraham was born in early 1752, and died later the same year.
• Hannah was born in 1753. She married Joseph Hill in 1773 and they had six children - Margaret, Edward, Martha, Joseph, Ann and George. Hannah died in 1817.
• Martha was born in 1756. She married John Haigh in 1777 and they had seven children - Ann, Brian, Thomas, William, John, another Ann and Martha. Her husband died in 1829, and Martha in 1841.
• Mary was born in 1759. She married Henry Dicken and moved to Litton with him. They din't have any children. Henry died in 1798, but Martha's hasn't been found.
• John Was born in 1762, but died two years later.

• John was born in early 1769, and died 9 months later, just a few days before his twin brother Edward,
• Unsurprisingly, Edward was born in early 1769, and died 9 months later, just a few days after his twin brother John !

   In the Name of God Amen I Henry Bockin of Tideswell in the County
   of Derby yeoman being weak in Body but of sound & disposing mind
   and understanding doe make my last will & testament in manner
   and form following First I will that my just debts funerall charges
   and Legacies herein after named be paid & discharged Item I give
   devise & bequeath the Lands tenements & premises hereafter
   mentioned that is to say One half Acre of Land be the same more
   or less lyeing in Tideswell open field at A certain place called
   Naylor the lands of Thomas Swann lyeing East & West And one
   Rood of Land more or less in A place called Crisp lands the lands of
   W^m Archer Esq lying North and the Lands belonging to the Extors
   of Tho^s Creswell deced south thereof And One pingle or peice of
   Inclosed Land lyeing At A place called Low Flatt in Tideswell afores^d
   containing half an Acre more or less (paying unto Rob^t Freeman Esq
   One shilling & Six penie yearly out of the s^d pingle) and one other
   Little pingle in Tideswell at a place there called Meddow containing
   One rood more or less unto Edward Bockin (son of my late Brother Ottiwell
   Bockin deceased) and his heires for ever Item I give unto John Bockin
   another of the sons of the s^d Ottiwell the severall Goods be now standing
   in his Dwelling House and w^ch belong to me Item I give the tenant
   right of the farme I hold under W^m Archer Esq unto the said Edward
   Bockin Item I will that the s^d Edward Bockin his heires & Assignes
   shall [.] out of the the rents & profitts of the aboves^d Lands & premises pay
   unto Robert Bockin another of the sons of the s^d Ottiwell
   the sume of Forty shillings yearly for & during the term of his natural
   life by four equall paym^ts to witt Christmas day Lady day
   Midsummer day and Michaelmas day the first payment to be made
   at such of s^d Days as first happen after my decease and further
   it is my will & mind that in default of paym^t of any the s^d quarterly
   paym^ts it shall & may be lawfull to & for the s^d Rob^t Bockin & his
   assignes to enter into my Lands aboe bequeathed to the s^d Edward
   Bockin & to distrain for the same & all arrearsages thereof
   Item I give unto the s^d John Bockin one Cow to be set [...] at the discre...
   of my Executor or three pounds in money w^ch he pleases Item I
   give unto Edward Barton One Cow to make choice of w^ch he pleases

   Bockin And do nominate & Appoint Richard Hardy of
   Tideswell aforesaid Currier Executor of this my Last will
   revoakeing all former wills by me heretofore made Item I
   give unto Rob^t Bockin son of my Nephew Robert Bockin the sume
   of Five pounde when & so [..] soon as he shall attain his Age of
   twenty one yeares And doe hereby charge the Lands by me bequeath
   to the s^d Edward Bockin with the paym^t thereof And Lastly do

15. There is no baptism recorded for Martha. However she is mentioned in Edward's will, and her husband is identified as John Haigh of Tideswell, victualler ⁽²⁵⁾. From this her burial can be found in August 1841, where she was said to be aged (a strangely precise) 85 years and 6 months. This tallies with her stated age of 85 in the 1841 census, placing her birth in early 1756.

    I Edward Bocking of Tideswell in the County of Derby
    Farmer being of sound and disposing mind memory and
    understanding praised be God, do make publish and declare
    this my last will and Testament in manner and form
    following that is to say, First I will order and direct that
    all my just Debts Funeral Charges and the Expenses of the
    probate of this my will be paid off and discharged by my
    Executor hereinafter named out of my Personal Estate and such
    other fund as is hereinafter provided for that purpose if necessary
    as soon as conveniently can be after my decease. I Give
    and devise unto my Daughter Hannah now the wife of
    Joseph Hill of Tideswell aforesaid Yeoman All that Field piece
    or parcel of Land or Ground or so much thereof as I am
    legally entitled to commonly called and knownby the name of
    The Cris[s]lin Heads containing by estimation three Roods or
    thereabouts as the same is situate lying and being in the
    Parish of Tideswell aforesaid and now in the tenure holding
    or occupation of George Oldfield of Tideswell aforesaid Yeoman
    Together with all and singular the Rights members and
    appurtenances thereunto belonging. To hold the same and
    every part and parcel thereof unto and To the use of the
    said Hannah Hill her Heirs and assigns for ever. I also
    Give and Devise unto my Daughter Martha now the wife of
    John Haigh of Tideswell aforesaid Victualer All that Field piece
    or parcel of Land or Ground commonly called and known by
    the name of The Low Flat containing by estimation three
    Roods or thereabouts as the same is situate lying and being
    in the Parish of Tideswell aforesaid and now in the tenure
    holding or occupation of the said George Ouldfield Together
    with all and singular the Rights Members and appurtenances
    thereunto belonging To hold the same and every part and
    parcel thereof unto and To the use of the said Martha Haigh
    her Heirs and assigns for ever. I also Give and Devise
    unto my Daughter Nancy now the wife of Robert Bramwell
    of Tideswell aforesaid Joiner All that Field piece or parcel of
    Land or Ground cmmonly called or known by the
    name or Nearlow or Nealow containing by estimation Three
    Roods or thereabouts as the same is situate lying and being
    in the parish of Tideswell aforesaid and now in the Tenure
    holding or Occupation of the said Robert Bramwell Together
    aith all and singular the Rights Members and appurtenances
    thereunto belonging To hold the same and every part and
    parcel thereof unto and To the use of the said Nancy
    Bramwell her Heirs and assigns for ever. I aso Give
    Devise and bequeath unto the said George Oldfield the
    Messuage Dwellinghouse or Tenement situate in Tideswell
    aforesaid wherein I now inhabit and dwell. Togerther with
    all and singular the Rights members Priviledges and
    appurtenances thereunto belonging or in any wise appertaining
    and also all and singular the Household Goods and Furniture
    implements of Household and Husbandry and all other my
    Goods Chattels and Effects whatsoever and wheresoever
    whereof I shall die siezed possessed of or entitled unto To
    hold the said Messuage or Dwellinghouse and premises
    Goods Chattels and Effects unto the said George Oldfield his
    Heirs Executors administrators and assigns To the intent and
    purpose and upon this special trust and confidence
    nevertheless That he the said George Oldfield his Executors or
    administrators do and shall as soon as conveniently can
    be after my decease enter upon and take possession of the same
    and frthwith to sell and dispose thereof to any person or
    persons whomsoever and out of the Money arising from such
    Sale or Sales as hereinbefore directed and such other Money
    as I may die seized or possessed of in the first place do and
    shall pay and discharge all my just Debts Funeral Charges
    the Expenses of the probate of this my last will and all such other
    reasoable costs charges and expenses
    as he or they may be putunto in the execution of the trust
    hereby in him and them reposed. And as for and concerning
    the residue of such Money so to be remaining in the hands of
    the said George Oldfield his executors or administrators after such
    last mentioned payments and deuctions shall be made these out
    I do hereby will order and direct that he the said George Oldfield
    his Executors or administrators shall forthwith devide the same into
    four as equal parts as can be and pay or cause to be paid one
    fourth part thereof to my said Daughter Hannah Hill one other
    fourth part thereof to my said Daughter Martha Haigh one other
    fourth part thereof to my Daughter Mary now the wife of Henry
    Dicken of Litton in the Parish of Tideswell aforesaid Farmer and
    the remaining one fourth part thereof to my said Daughter
    Nancy Bramwell to and for their several and respective
    use and as to the residue of my estate and effects whatsoever
    I do hereby Give Devise and bequeath the same unto and to the
    use of my said four Daughters their Heirs Executors administrators
    and assigns respectively in equal shares and proportions for ever
    Provided always that the said George Oldfield his Executors or
    administrators shall and may from time to time deduct and
    retain out of the monies which by virtue of this my will shall
    come to his or their hands not only all such costs charges and
    expenses as he or they may be put unto But also all such sum
    and sums of Money as he or they shall reasonably deserve for
    his or their trouble and loss of time in executing the trusts
    aforesaid and shall not be chargeable for any more Money
    than shall actually come to his or their hands nor for any
    loss or damage to happen or arise in the execution of such
    trusts or any of them provided such loss or damage shall
    happen without his or their wilful default or neglect and
    lastly I do hereby nominate constitute and appoint the said
    George Oldfield Sole Executor of this my will hereby revoking
    all wills by me heretofore made. In witness whereof I the said
    Edward Bocking the Testator have to this my last will and
    testament contained in one sheet of paper set my hand and
    seal this seventh day of September in the Year of our Lord
    one thousand seven hundred and ninety seven.
