ROUGH DRAFT

Mary was born in Tideswell in June 1837, the only child of Joseph and Ann Gilbert ⁽¹⁾. During her early life the family lived with her mother's parents on Manchester Road ⁽²⁾, before moving to Back Lane ⁽³⁾.

On 21st April 1856, whilst already heavily pregnant, she married George Jackson at St John the Baptist's in Tideswell ⁽⁴⁾, and he moved in with her and her parents ⁽⁶⁾. Their first son, Leonard, was born just 3 months later ⁽⁵⁾. followed by Clement, two years after that ⁽⁵⁾, then a daughter Martha Ann in December 1860 ⁽⁵⁾. All of their first three children were baptised at the same time, in January 1861 ⁽⁵⁾. Her next son, Joseph, was born in 1863 ⁽⁷⁾, followed by a daughter Mary Elizabeth in 1865 ⁽⁸⁾.

Her father died in 1866 ⁽⁹⁾. Her next son was George, born in 1868 ⁽¹⁰⁾, then came another daughter, Sarah Jane, in 1870 ⁽¹¹⁾. Her mother died in 1874 ⁽¹²⁾, then later the same year she had another son, John ⁽¹⁴⁾. Two years later her daughter Mary Elizabeth died ⁽¹⁵⁾. She had another daughter, Charity Elizabeth, the next year ⁽¹⁶⁾, but she died before reaching her first birthday ⁽¹⁷⁾. A few months before Leonard, Mary's eldest son, also died ⁽¹⁸⁾. Her youngest daughter, Delilah was born in 1879 ⁽¹⁹⁾, then finally her youngest son, Harry, was born in 1881 ⁽²¹⁾⁽²²⁾, by which time the family had moved to Town End ⁽²⁰⁾.

Mary died on 12th August 1886, aged 49 ⁽²³⁾, and was buried 3 days later ⁽²⁴⁾. Her husband survived her by nearly 19 years ⁽²⁵⁾.

Brief details of her children:

Leonard was born in Tideswell in 1856, and worked as a lead miner as hegrew up, but died at the just 22 years old, not having married.

Clement was born in Tideswell in 1858. He married Sarah Ellen Brocklehurst in 1882, and they had (at least) 3 children - Laurence, Mary Ellen and Gladys. Clement worked as a railway labourer up until the time of the 1901 census, which is the last that is known of him.

Martha Ann was born in Tideswell in 1860. She married Robert Ponsomby in 1883 and they had (at least) three children - Leonard, Hannah Jane and Mary. She was still living in Tideswell at the time of the 1901 census, which is the last that is known of her.

Joseph was born in Tideswell in 1863. He worked as a railway labourer. He married Lillian Walker on New Years Eve 1885 and they had seven children - five of whom were Ernest, Clement, Mary, Sarah and Harry. Nothing more is known of him after 1905, when he was the informant of his father's death to the register office.

Mary Elizabeth was born in Tideswell in 1865 and died the following year.

George was born in Tideswell in 1868. He died there in 1890 aged 21.

Sarah Jane was born in Tideswell in 1870. She married Charles Cartledge in 1892. They had daughters Mary and Ellen in about 1893 and 1896 respectively, then a son in 1901. However the son's name is not known, and nothing later is known of Sarah Jane.

John was born in Tideswell in 1874. He married Sarah Jane Bradbury in 1896. Their first child George was born in 1899, but nothing is known after this other than that they were still living in Tideswell at the time of the 1901 census.

Charity Elizabeth was born in Tideswell in 1877 but died the following year.

Delilah was born in 1879 in Tideswell. She married John Nadin, and their first child was Evan born in 1901. Nothing more is known of her.

* Listing George as a weaver in Martha Ann's baptism must be an error, as he can't have changed jobs 2/3 of the way through the church service! Everything else indicates he was a lead miner at this time, and he is not known to have ever worked as a weaver.

No baptism has been found for Joseph, but he is listed as George's 7 year old son in the census of April 1871, and the birth of a Mary Elizabeth Jackson was registered in Bakewell registration district in the 2nd quarter of 1863.
No baptism has been found for Mary Elizabeth, but she is listed as George's 5 year old daughter in the census of April 1871, and the birth of a Mary Elizabeth Jackson was registered in Bakewell registration district in the 3rd quarter of 1865.
