George was born in Little Hucklow in 1832 ⁽¹⁾, the only son of John & Sarah. He had an older sister Ann, born the year before ⁽¹⁾⁽⁵⁾, and a younger sister Elizabeth, born two years later ⁽³⁾⁽⁵⁾. His mother died around the time of his eigth birthday ⁽⁴⁾, and his father two years later ⁽⁶⁾. He went to live with his Uncle Thomas in Tideswell, and started work as a lead miner ⁽⁷⁾.

He married the already heavily pregant Mary Gilbert at St John the Baptist's in Tideswell on 21st April 1856 ⁽⁸⁾, and moved in with her parents ⁽¹⁰⁾. Their first son, Leonard, was born just 3 months later ⁽⁹⁾. followed by Clement, two years after that ⁽⁹⁾, then a daughter Martha Ann in December 1860 ⁽⁹⁾. All of their first three children were baptised at the same time, in January 1861 ⁽⁹⁾. His next son, Joseph, was born in 1863 ⁽¹¹⁾, followed by a daughter Mary Elizabeth in 1865 ⁽¹²⁾.

His father in law died the following year ⁽¹³⁾, and George appears to have become head of the household (i.e. his mother is law was living in his house, rather than him living in his mother in law's ⁽¹⁶⁾). His next son George was born in 1868 ⁽¹⁴⁾, then a daughter, Sarah Jane, in 1870 ⁽¹⁵⁾, and another son, John in 1874 ⁽¹⁷⁾.

Somewhere around this time George gave up lead mining, and became a labourer on the railway ⁽¹⁸⁾.

His daughter Mary Elizabeth died in 1876 ⁽¹⁹⁾. He had another one, Charity Elizabeth, in 1877 ⁽²⁰⁾, but she only lived for just under a year, dying in April 1878 ⁽²¹⁾, followed later that year by his eldest son Leonard ⁽²²⁾. His youngest daughter, Delilah, was born the following year ⁽²³⁾, and then finally, his youngest son, Harry, was born in 1881 ⁽²⁵⁾⁽²⁶⁾ - by which time the family had moved to Town End ⁽²⁴⁾.

George's wife, Mary, died in August 1886 ⁽²⁷⁾, hence by the time of the 1891 census, George was living with just three of his children, Sarah Jane, John and Harry ⁽²⁸⁾. By the time of the next census in 1901, all three had left home, but his youngest daughter, Delilah, had moved back in with her husband and baby ⁽²⁹⁾.

George died on 12th March 1905 ⁽³⁰⁾.

Brief details of his children:

Leonard was born in Tideswell in 1856, and worked as a lead miner as hegrew up, but died at the just 22 years old, not having married.

Clement was born in Tideswell in 1858. He married Sarah Ellen Brocklehurst in 1882, and they had (at least) 3 children - Laurence, Mary Ellen and Gladys. Clement worked as a railway labourer up until the time of the 1901 census, which is the last that is known of him.

Martha Ann was born in Tideswell in 1860. She married Robert Ponsomby in 1883 and they had (at least) three children - Leonard, Hannah Jane and Mary. She was still living in Tideswell at the time of the 1901 census, which is the last that is known of her.

Joseph was born in Tideswell in 1863. He worked as a railway labourer. He married Lillian Walker on New Years Eve 1885 and they had seven children - five of whom were Ernest, Clement, Mary, Sarah and Harry. Nothing more is known of him after 1905, when he was the informant of his father's death to the register office.

Mary Elizabeth was born in Tideswell in 1865 and died the following year.

George was born in Tideswell in 1868. He died there in 1890 aged 21.

Sarah Jane was born in Tideswell in 1870. She married Charles Cartledge in 1892. They had daughters Mary and Ellen in about 1893 and 1896 respectively, then a son in 1901. However the son's name is not known, and nothing later is known of Sarah Jane.

John was born in Tideswell in 1874. He married Sarah Jane Bradbury in 1896. Their first child George was born in 1899, but nothing is known after this other than that they were still living in Tideswell at the time of the 1901 census.

Charity Elizabeth was born in Tideswell in 1877 but died the following year.

Delilah was born in 1879 in Tideswell. She married John Nadin, and their first child was Evan born in 1901. Nothing more is known of her.

No baptism has been found for Joseph, but he is listed as George's 7 year old son in the census of April 1871, and the birth of a Mary Elizabeth Jackson was registered in Bakewell registration district in the 2nd quarter of 1863.
No baptism has been found for Mary Elizabeth, but she is listed as George's 5 year old daughter in the census of April 1871, and the birth of a Mary Elizabeth Jackson was registered in Bakewell registration district in the 3rd quarter of 1865.
