Robert was born in Litton on 16th October 1841 (1), and baptised the following day at St John the Baptists in Tideswell (2). He was the second child of Matthew & Elizabeth, having an elder sister Mary Jane. His younger brother William was born in about 1850 (3). When he left school Robert took up weaving, like many others in the village, and continued in the same line of work throughout his life (4).
On 10th November 1866, he and Hannah Goodwin from Cressbrook, were married in Tideswell church (6). They initially lived in Litton, where their only daughter, Mary Jane, was born in April 1868 (7). His father died the following February (8).
They had to moved to Cressbrook by the time of the 1871 census (9), probably either upon taking up jobs at the mill, or simply to be nearer if they already worked there. By the 1881 census however, they were living in Ashton under Lyne, at 79 Princess Street, right next door to his brother William's family, and their mother. His sister in law Alice Goodwin (wife of his wife's brother William), was also visiting them at the time. They were all still weaving for a living (10).
Robert and family had moved back home to Cressbrook by the census of April 1891 (11) (although his brother was still in Ashton). No health issues were noted on the census for Robert, but by the end of the following year, having seen his daughter married in the summer (12), he was in the County Asylum in Mickelover, where he died of "Exhaustion from Epilepsy" on 16th December, aged 51 (13). He was buried in Tideswell a few days later (14).
His mother Elizabeth died the following year (15), and his wife Hannah five years after that (16).
