George Walton
died 1690
| Father | unknown |
| Mother | unknown |
| Wife | Alice(?) |
| Children | William, Charles, John(?), George(?), Alice(?), Elizabeth(?) |
Nothing is known of George's origins, but he appears to have been the progenitor of all the Waltons of Tideswell. His wife was probably called Alice (1).
He first appeared in the Tideswell parish register in 1650, when his son William was baptised (3). His son Charles followed 2 years later (4). He probably had at least two more sons John and George, and two daughters, Alice and Elizabeth too (5).
He seems to have been a close associate of the Mycock family, being a witness to the will, and taking the inventory, of William Mycock in 1667(6)(7), then taking the inventory of Thomas Mycock in 1676 (8).
He died in in 1690 and was buried on 18th December in Tideswell (9). His wife survived him by 10 years (2).
Brief details of his children:
- William has his own page
- Charles was born in Tideswell in 1852. He married a woman called Margaret, and they had three children Hellin, George and Margaret between 1678 and 1685. They may possibly have an unknown child (who died in infancy) and a daughter Alice whilst living in Wardlow in 1674 and 1675. His wife Margaret died in 1692, and Charles died in 1720, when he was described as a pauper.
- John, who is believed to have been George's son, married a woman called Alice. Their first child died an infant in 1677, and was followed by Susannah, Alice, Elizabeth, Christian, John and Hellin. Alice died in 1723, and John in 1730.
- George, who is believed to have been George's son, married Anna Swindell in Tideswell in 1686. They had three known children - Martha, Elizabeth and William. George died in 1732.
- Alice, who is believed to have been George's daughter, married George Richards in Tideswell in 1689. It is not known what happened to them after marriage.
- Elizabeth, who is believed to have been George's daughter, married Thomas Middleton in Tideswell in 1692. They lived in Wheston, where they had 11 children - Emma, William, Elizabeth, Maria, Hannah, Gervase, Martha, Simeon, Jonathan, John & Sara. She may be the Elizabeth Middleton who was buried in 1742.

- This is based on my attempt to reconstruct the entire Walton family of Tideswell from the parish registers (5). There is a burial of an otherwise unknown Alice Walton, widow, ten years after his death (2), with no other candidate husband for her besides George.
Parish Register of St John the Baptist, Tideswell, includes the entry:
[January 1699] Sept Alicia Walton de Tiddswell vidua 14
This is dated by the Julian calendar, so is actually 14/1/1700 in the Gregorian calendar.

[Sept: 1652] Bapt George Charles Walton sone of George 11:
No baptisms are recorded in Tideswell for these four possible children of George. This claim is based on my attempt to reconstruct the entire Walton family of Tideswell from the parish registers. Other than his possible wife Alice Walton (1), and a later Charles Walton (probable grandson of George, who was having children from 1703-1713), these four people and their descendants are the only Waltons from the period I worked on, whose lineage back to George cannot be easily gleaned from the parish registers (and a few wills too in later generations).
There was a John Walton having children in Tideswell between 1677-1692, a George Walton who married in Tideswell in 1686 and had children baptised there up till 1701, and an Alice Walton who married there in 1686. These three were thus contemporaries of George's known sons William (children between 1673-1684) and Charles (children 1678-1685), and likely to be their siblings.
Elizabeth Walton married in Tideswell in 1692. She is probably another younger sibling. However this assumes that the two baptisms in 1850 (3) & 1852 (4) were at or near the start of the period when George was having children (which fits the apparent ages of John, George and Alice), and that Elizabeth was amongst his youngest children, born perhaps 15 or 20 years later. It is also possble though, that Elizabeth could amongst George's eldest grandchildren (the eldest known of was William's son William, who was baptised in 1673).
