Joseph Gilbert
1753 - 1793

Joseph's signature at the time of his marriage in 1777 (8)
Joseph was born in Litton in 1753, one of twin sons of Samuel and Martha (1). His twin brother George only survived for a few days though (2). He had a sister Elizabeth, about 3 years his senior (3), and another one, Mary, was born in 1755 (4), but she died aged 3 (5).
His mother died when he was 12 (6), but his father remarried a widow called Ann Howe about 5 years later (7).
On 27th Janusry 1777, he married Martha Mosley, at St the Baptist's in Tideswell (8), and they settled in Litton, where his father died the following year (9). His first son, named Samuel after his father, was born in 1779 (10), followed by Henry in 1781 (11), Joseph in 1783 (12) and Thomas in 1785 (13). Thomas only survived for 3 or 4 months (14). His only daughter Mary came along in 1786 (15), but she too only survived a few months (16). The family appears to have moved to Tideswell sometime during her short life (17). Another son Anthony was born in 1788 (18), followed by Thomas in 1790 (19), and finally Ralph in 1791 (20).
Joseph died aged just 40 in 1793, and was buried in Tideswell on 14th June (21). His wife survived him by a massive 47 years (22)!
Brief details of his children:
- Samuel was born in Litton in 1779. Nothing more is known of him.
- Henry was born in Litton in 1781. He was working as a weaver when he married Sarah Cook in 1805. She died lass than a year later, and he remarried a woman called Elizabeth, with whom he had a daughter called Sarah in 1808. However this second wife also died soon after the birth of their daughter, so he married for a third time, this time to a woman called Margaret. They had sons Joseph, Samuel, Thomas and Henry (and another Henry after the first one died), and daughters Martha and Ann. At this time Henry was said to be both a farmer and a victualler. Sometime in the early 1830s he and the family moved to Macclesfield, where his wife died in 1837. Nothing more is known of him after this.
- Joseph was born in Litton in 1783. He married a woman called Margaret and they settled in Tideswell where they had just one son Samuel, and Joseph worked as a weaver. His wife died in 1844, and he died in 1858.
- Thomas was born in Litton in 1785. He only lived a few months.
- Mary was born in Litton in 1786, and died the following year in Tideswell.
- Anthony was born in Tideswell in 1788. He married a woman called Ann (possibly Ann Dawson), and they settled in Tideswel. They had 5 sons - Thomas, Joseph, Anthony, James and Zacharius; and 3 daughters - Martha, Mary and Ann. He started out as a weaver but became a draper around 1820. He died in 1857, and his wife survived him by 9 years.
- Thomas has his own page.
- Ralph was born in Tideswell in 1791. He moved to Manchester, where nothing is known of his life, except that he died in 1834.

All the previous entries in the register, up to and including Mary's baptism explicitly state that they lived in Litton, whilst all later entries, from her burial onwards either sate that they were in Tideswell, or don't mention their place of residence at all - implying that they were in Tideswell itself rather than any of the outlying places within its parish. This is further confirmed by later census entried of Joseph's sons Anthony & Thomas (bapt one and three years respectively after this apparent move), who stated their place of birth to be Tideswell.
Parish Register of St John the Baptist's, Tideswell includes the entry:
[Baptisms, 22 June 1788] Anthony, sn of Jo:s & Mary Gilbert Tideswell
There was no couple called Joseph and Mary Gilbert in Tideswell at the time, so this is believed to be an error which should read "Martha".
