Roger Hodgkinson
circa 1590 - 1658

Roger's mark (just the big R in the centre), on the letters of administration for his father's estate in 1637 (18)
Roger was probably born in Over Haddon sometime around 1590 (1), the eldest son of William and Alice. He had two younger brothers, Richard and Francis. Nothing is known of his early life, but he may have married a woman called Elizabeth (2).
He first appears in the parish register when his twin children, born premature, were buried in 1615 (3). However the parish registers haven't survived from before then, so they may not have been his first children. His daughter Isabella was born in 1616 (4), followed by Alice in 1621 (5) and Mary in 1623 (6), but she only lived a few months (7). His mother died during Mary's short life too (14).
Roger's only son William was born in 1624 (8), followed by two more daughters, Margaret in 1628 (9), who only lived a couple of months (10), and Elizabeth in 1629, who also died an infant (11).
His father died in May 1637 (15), leaving all his estate to Roger (except a shilling to his brother Richard) (16). Roger had to go to Bakewell (17) on 20th June to claim his inheritence (18), which came to between £3 and £4 after the cost of the funerall etc (17).
In 1641 he was named as a beneficiary in his niece Joane's will, who left him two shillings and sixpence (19).
Roger's stepmother died in 1653 (20). He died in March 1658, and was buried in Bakewell (21).
Brief details of his children:
- Un-named premature twins were born, and immediately died, in 1615
- Isabella was born in 1616. She married Humphrey Marhshall in 1643 and they had three children, Maria, Hugo and Elizabeth. Nothing more is known of them.
- Alice was born in 1621. Nothing more is known of her.
- Mary was born in 1623 but only lived a few months.
- William has his own page.
- Margaret was born in 1628, but only lived a few months.
- Elizabeth was probably born in 1629, and died the same day.
Sources:
- His father lived in Over Haddon later in life, and there's no reason to think he hadn't always lived there. The estimated year of Roger's birth is simply a rough guess based upon the dates of the (known) births of his children (1815-1829). This would make him just under 70 at death which seems feasible.
- The only likely unaccounted for burial of a female Hodgkinson in Bakewell parish register, in the years after the birth of Roger's children, is Elizabeth in 1656, just two years before Roger's death. The next ones are Joane or Dorothy in 1673 and 1675 respectively, which would be 60 years after the baptism of his first (known) child. One of Rogers daughters was named Elizabeth, but none were named Joane or Dorothy.
- Bishop's transcript of Bakewell Parish Register contains the entry:
"Genetti abortini Rogeri Hodgkinson sepultus exant 28 die" [June 1615].

*Meaning "same day" - above entry was dated 2nd March 1628
There is no record of a baptism for Elizabeth in the parish register (transcript), but there appears to be two burial entries on the same day(12)(13), so I am assuming one of these is in error, and should be her baptism

Parish Register of All Saints, Bakewell includes the entry:
Gracia Hodgkinson sepulta erat secundo die mensis May 1653
Bakewell Parish Register (transcript by Val Neal) lists the burial of Roger Hodgkinson, on 17th March 1658.
Notes:
Confirm transcript entries apparently from 31st October 1629 in PR (note Bakewell BT from this period missing, and PR from this era is difficult to read on film, so will have to confirm in original. However what can be read on film appears to show that these two entries DO NOT exist on the date given).
Also confirm entry for Roger's burial in 1658. Again the film is difficult to read here, so the original will need to be checked.
