Hannah was born in Monyash in the spring of 1837 ⁽¹⁾, the third child of Thomas & Ellen. She had two older sisters, Mary and Eliza. ⁽³⁾. A younger sister, Harriet, was born about 2 years later ⁽⁴⁾, but she died an infant ⁽⁵⁾. Another sister, Elizabeth, was born in 1841 ⁽⁶⁾, but then her sister Eliza died a couple of years later ⁽⁸⁾. Her only brother, William, was born at the end of 1843 ⁽⁹⁾, then finally another sister, Maria, in 1846 ⁽¹⁰⁾.

Her father was a lead miner at the Magpie Mine in Sheldon, and sometime in the mid-late 1840s, the family moved into a house on the site of the mine itself, probably as the result of a promotion for her father ⁽³⁾⁽¹¹⁾. Her mother died in 1858 ⁽¹²⁾, and by 1861 Hannah had moved to Millers Dale, where she lived on Joseph Mower's farm, working as a dairy maid ⁽¹³⁾.

By the time of her marriage she was living in Ashford. She married Joseph Swindell, a wheel-wright from Tideswell, on October 26th 1863 in Bakewell ⁽¹⁴⁾, and they set up home in Tideswell. Their eldest son, John Thomas, was born the following September ⁽¹⁵⁾, followed by eldest daughter, Mary Ellen, in the spring of 1866 ⁽¹⁶⁾. They had another son, Samuel, in 1868 ⁽¹⁷⁾, then a daughter Emma in 1869 ⁽¹⁸⁾. By the census of 1871 ⁽¹⁹⁾, she, Joseph, and the four children, are seen to be living at Crow Holt in Tideswell. Just a few weeks later, their next daughter, Elizabeth, was born ⁽²⁰⁾, followed by son William the following year ⁽²¹⁾. Their daughter Elizabeth died, aged just 5, in June 1876 ⁽²²⁾. About a year later, they had a son Henry ⁽²³⁾, then their youngest daughter Hannah was born in 1879 ⁽²⁴⁾. Finally their youngest son, Advent, was born in 1871 ⁽²⁶⁾.

The summer of 1884 was not a happy one for Hannah. Her son Samuel died in June ⁽²⁷⁾, followed by her father died in July ⁽²⁸⁾ (leaving her an equal share of his estate ⁽²⁹⁾), then her son John Thomas in September ⁽³⁰⁾.

Her daughter Mary Ellen got married in 1888 ⁽³¹⁾, but she didn't go far, as she and her new husband John Thomas Mosely were living next door at the time of the 1891 census ⁽³²⁾.

Hannah's son, William, died in 1898 ⁽³³⁾, followed by her husband, Joseph, in 1899 ⁽³⁴⁾, thus by the census of 1901 only sons Henry and Advent, and daughter Hannah, were left living with her ⁽³⁵⁾. Hannah herself died just a few months later on 7th July ⁽³⁶⁾.

Brief details of her children:

John Thomas was born between April and August 1864 in Tideswell. By age 16 he was working as a ticket collector on the railway, but died at just 20.

Mary Ellen was born on 24th March 1866 in Tideswell. She married John Thomas Moseley on 11th Februray 1888 in Tideswell Church. Their first daughter Emma was born in 1890, followed by Hannah Elizabeth in 1891, who in 1901 was described (in the politically incorrect terminology of the day) as being an "imbecile from childhood". Her son William Swindell was born in 1898 and her daughter Joyce about May 1900. Nothing more is known of her.

Samuel was born in Tideswell on 17th May 1868, and died at the age of 16 in 1884.

Elizabeth was born on 16th April 1871 in Tideswell, and died just 5 years later.
William was born in 1872, and was apprentice to his father, but he died in 1898.
Henry was born in late summer 1877, and became a wheelwright like his father. He married a woman called Lily Hopkinson in the summer of 1901, and they had at least one child, Annie who was born about 1903 and died in 1972. Henry died on 12th August 1951, and his wife just over 3 years later.
Hannah was born in Tideswell in about the summer of 1879. She married George Walker in about 1913. Nothing more is known of her.
Advent was born in Tideswell in 1881. By the turn of the century he was a "bus driver" (presumably of the horse drawn variety!), but nothing more is known of him.

She was baptised on 30th April 1837 ⁽²⁾, and nowhere later in life does she give any indication of being born any significant amount of time before then, indeed her age seems to fluctuate a little in the opposite direction in censuses and her death certificate, so its safe to assume she was probably born no more than a week or two before then.

No baptism has been found for Maria, but the birth of a Maria Ashmore was registered in Bakewell in the first quarter of 1846. This ties up fairly well with her declared age on later censuses etc.
