William Ashmore

1741 - 1822

William was born in 1741 in Monyash ⁽¹⁾, the 4th child of Thomas & Keziah. He had an older brother Thomas, and two older sisters, Mary and Margaret ⁽²⁾. A younger brother Samuel was born 3 years later ⁽³⁾, but he only lived for a couple of years ⁽⁴⁾. His youngest brother John was born in 1747 ⁽⁵⁾.

His mother died in 1766 ⁽⁶⁾.

He married a woman called Martha, and they settled in Monyash, sometime prior to 1771, when their eldest son William was born ⁽⁷⁾. A couple of daughters came next - Mary the following year ⁽⁸⁾, and Martha in 1775 ⁽⁹⁾. His son Thomas, who was probably named after his grandfather (and seems to have been baptised twice!), followed in 1776 ^(10)(11), before Thomas senior, William's father, died in 1777 ⁽¹²⁾. After another son, John, in 1778/9 ⁽¹³⁾, there were two more daughters, Keziah in 1780 ⁽¹⁴⁾, and Sarah in 1783 ⁽¹⁵⁾. Son Samuel was born in 1785 ⁽¹⁶⁾, then twin sons Joseph and Benjamin in 1788 ⁽¹⁷⁾ - although unfortunately Joseph only survived for a couple of weeks ⁽¹⁸⁾, and Benjamin for less than a month ⁽¹⁹⁾. Finally, his youngest daughter, Rachel, was born in 1790 ⁽²⁰⁾, but she too died young at the age of 4 ⁽²¹⁾.

His wife died aged 52 in 1799 ^(22)(23), but William lived on to the ripe old age of 81, dying on 24th October 1822 ⁽²²⁾. He was buried in Monyash four days later ⁽²⁴⁾.

• William was born in Monyash in 1771. He married a woman called Ann, and they had a daughter Ann and a son William, before his wife died young. William moved to Elton sometime after her death, and he died there in 1818.
• Mary was born in 1772 in Monyash. Aged just 15, she married William Green from Taddington, and they settled there, and had tweo sons, Samuel and William. Her husband died in 1794, and she remarried just 6 months later to Benjamin Bagshaw, with whom she had five sons (William, Benjamin, Thomas, Robert and George) and four daughters (Rachel, Hannah, Sarah and Keziah). She died in Taddington in 1854.
• Martha was born in Monyash in 1775. She had an illegitimate daughter Rachel in 1800. Nothing more is known of her.
• Thomas was born in 1776 in Monyash. He married Mary Dale of Biggin in 1804, and they initially setup home in Hartington, where they had two sons, Thurston and Thomas. They then moved to Biggin, where they had four more sons (William, Samuel, Joseph and Benjamin) and two daughters (Ann and Martha). His wife died in 1839. Thomas died in 1847.

• Keziah was born in Monyash in 1780. In 1808 she married William Wainwright. They initially lived in Wormhill, but then settled in Tunstead. They had three sons - Joseph, Robert and Henry, and a daughter Mary Elizabeth. Her husband died in 1845. Keziah kept the farm on at Tunstead for a few years after his death, but then sometime in the early 1850s she retired to Wormhill where she died in 1855.
• Sarah was born in Monyash in 1782. She married Jonas Rider in Manchester in 1805. Nothing is known of her again until the 1851 census when she was living in Farnworth in Lancashire. She was still alive in 1852.
• Samuel was born in Monyash in 1785. Sometime after 1830, he married the widow Ann Wheeldon, who already had a son Joseph. He doesn't appear to have had any children of his own. He stayed in Monyash all his life as a farmer, and died there in 1863, the year after his wife had died.
• Joseph was Bejamin's twin. He was born in 1788, but only lived a couple of weeks.
• Benjamin was Joseph's twin. He lived for less than a month.
• Rachel was born in Monyash in 1790, and died there in 1794.

    This is undoubtably an error, and should read "Ashmore", as the burial of Martha is otherwise missing, and there are no other entries for anyone with the surname Ashman anywhere in the Monyash registers.
