Margaret Swindell

1735 - 1786

Margaret was born in 1735 ⁽¹⁾, the eldest daughter of Job & Catherine Swindell. She had younger siblings Samuel, Ann, Ruth and Job ⁽²⁾. Her father died when she was 13 ⁽²⁾.

She married John Walton at St John the Baptist's in Tideswell on 1st Sepember 1756 ⁽³⁾, and their eldest son Richard was born the following spring ⁽⁴⁾. Their next son, John, was born in 1759 ⁽⁵⁾, then came a daughter Susannah in 1762 ⁽⁶⁾, but she died just two years later ⁽⁷⁾. Two more daughters followed - Jane in 1765 ⁽⁸⁾, then Nancy in 1769 ⁽⁹⁾. They had a son Joseph in 1773 ⁽¹⁰⁾, then a daughter Margaret in 1776 ⁽¹¹⁾ (who died aged one ⁽¹²⁾), and finally a son James in 1779 ⁽¹³⁾.

She died, aged fifty, in February 1786 ⁽¹⁴⁾. Her husband survived her by twenty years ⁽¹⁵⁾

• Richard was born in Tideswell in 1757. He married Elizabeth Richardson in Tideswell in 1781 and they had seven children - John, Jane, Richard, Elizabeth, Nancy, William & Sarah. He died in 1797.
• John was born in 1759 in Tideswell. He married Grace Haigh there in 1832 and they had eight children - John (died an infant), another John, Ann, Margaret, William Haigh, Elisha, Emmett & Henrietta. John died in 1833.
• Susannah was born in 1762. She only lived for two years.
• Jane was born in Tideswell in 1765. She married Matthew Flint in 1784 (and her sister Nancy married his brother Hugh four years later). They had nine children - Ann, Joseph, Margaret, Matthew, Kitty, Jane, Richard Walton, Elizabeth and Sarah. Jane died in 1830.

• Joseph was born in 1773 in Tideswell. He married Elizabeth Wood in 1798, and they had eleven children - Ann, Sarah, Margaret, Samuel, Sally, Emmett, Richard (who married Martha Sutton, the daughter of his father's half sister Ann), John, Joseph (died an infant), George and another Joseph. He died in 1845.
• Margaret was born in Tideswell in 1776, but died the following year.
• James was born in 1779. In 1801 he narried Ann Gibson and they had four children - Margaret, John, Richard & Hannah. Following the death of his wife in August 1809, he quickly remarried a woman called Mary (who may have been his wife's younger sister), and had another five children - Ann, James, Mariann, Joseph and Eliza. he died in 1856.
