John Walton

1736 - 1807

John was born in Tideswell in 1736 ⁽¹⁾, the eldest son of John and Jane. He had an older sister named Alice, and younger siblings Richard, Jane, William, Sarah, Mary, Barbara, Ann, James and Susannah. ⁽²⁾.

He married Margaret Swindell at St John the Baptist's in Tideswell on 1st September 1756 ⁽³⁾, and their eldest son Richard was born the following spring ⁽⁴⁾. Their next son was John, born in 1759 ⁽⁵⁾, then came a daughter Susannah in 1762 ⁽⁶⁾, but she died two years later ⁽⁷⁾. Two more daughters followed - Jane in 1765 ⁽⁸⁾, then Nancy in 1769 ⁽⁹⁾.

Following the death of his mother in 1772 ⁽¹⁰⁾, he had a son Joseph in 1773 ⁽¹¹⁾, then a daughter Margaret in 1776 ⁽¹²⁾ (who died age one ⁽¹³⁾), and finally a son James in 1779 ⁽¹⁴⁾.

His father died in 1781 ⁽¹⁵⁾, leaving his house and property to John's second son, John. John junior was to pay his father twenty pounds out of the estate ⁽¹⁶⁾.

His wife Margaret died in 1786 ⁽¹⁷⁾. The following year, fifty year old John then started all over again, marrying Sarah Woodroof ⁽¹⁸⁾, about 18 years his junior ⁽¹⁹⁾. They had a daughter Margaret just four months later ⁽²⁰⁾, followed by Susannah in 1789 ⁽²¹⁾, Grace in 1790 ⁽²²⁾, Ann in 1792 ⁽²³⁾, and finally Sarah in 1797 ⁽²⁴⁾ when John was over 60!

His daughter Grace died in 1802 ⁽²⁵⁾. Probably sensing his own impending demise, John made his will in the summer of 1806, leaving everything to his wife ⁽²⁶⁾. However he lived for well over another year, dying just before Christmas 1807 ⁽²⁸⁾. His widow Sarah lived for another 11 years ⁽²⁹⁾.

• Richard was born in Tideswell in 1757. He married Elizabeth Richardson in Tideswell in 1781 and they had seven children - John, Jane, Richard, Elizabeth, Nancy, William & Sarah. He died in 1797.
• John was born in 1759 in Tideswell. He married Grace Haigh there in 1832 and they had eight children - John (died an infant), another John, Ann, Margaret, William Haigh, Elisha, Emmett & Henrietta. John died in 1833.
• Susannah was born in 1762. She only lived for two years.
• Jane was born in Tideswell in 1765. She married Matthew Flint in 1784 (and her sister Nancy married his brother Hugh four years later). They had nine children - Ann, Joseph, Margaret, Matthew, Kitty, Jane, Richard Walton, Elizabeth and Sarah. Jane died in 1830.

• Joseph was born in 1773 in Tideswell. He married Elizabeth Wood in 1798, and they had eleven children - Ann, Sarah, Margaret, Samuel, Sally, Emmett, Richard (who married Martha Sutton, the daughter of his father's half sister Ann), John, Joseph (died an infant), George and another Joseph. He died in 1845.
• Margaret was born in Tideswell in 1776, but died the following year.
• James was born in 1779. In 1801 he narried Ann Gibson and they had four children - Margaret, John, Richard & Hannah. Following the death of his wife in August 1809, he quickly remarried a woman called Mary (who may have been his wife's younger sister), and had another five children - Ann, James, Mariann, Joseph and Eliza. he died in 1856.
• Margaret was born in Tideswell in 1787. She married Jarvis Cartledge in 1814 and they had four sons - William, Richard, Jarvis & Samuel. She died in 1871.
• Susannah was born in Tideswell in 1789. She married Samuel Hudson there in 1813. They had seven children - Ann, Sarah, John, Martha, Elizabeth, Marianne & Eliza. They started off living in Tideswell, but also had spells in Fairfield and Wheston before returning. Susannah died in 1865.
• Grace was born in Tideswell in 1790. She died aged twelve.
• Ann was born in Tideswell in 1792. She married Amarius Sutton in 1811, and they had eight children - Elizabeth, Ann, Sarah, Martha (who married Richard, the son of her mother's half brother Joseph), Robert, Richard, William and Maria. She died about 1840.
• Sarah was very similar in age to her niece Sarah (daughter of eldest half brother Richard) and I haven't been able to deduce which one of them married the widower Adam Townsend in Tideswell in 1825 and died there in 1841, and which one married the widower Robert Dawson in Tideswell in 1829 and died in Newhaven in 1839.

    be God for the same do make and ordain this my last
    Will and Testament in Manner and form following.
    First I give and bequeath unto my Executor Henry Jackson
    all my real and personal estate In trust first of all
    I will that my just debts and funeral expenses shal be
    paid.   In the next place I give and bequeath
    unto my Granson John Walton all my Dwelling house
    where in I now inhabit and dwell with all the Backside
    Garden and all the premises thereunto belonging likewise
    with all my household furniture stock in trade working
    tools Book debts and all the whole of my effects he my
    said Grandson paying unto my Son John Walton
    his Heirs Executors or assigns the sum of twenty
    pounds of Good and lawfull money of Great Britian
    in twelve months after my decease. Likewise it is
    my will that my Grandson John Walton shall pay
    unto my Daughters Alice Kirk, Jane Barker, Sarah
    Gandy, Mary Bunting and Ann Tomlinson the sum
    of two Gunies a piece in twelve months after my
    decease. I likewise give and bequeath unto my
    Grand daughter Alice Walton, the sum of twenty poun[ds]
    which my Executor hath put out to Intrest for the said
    Infant Alice Walton. Likewise I give and bequeath unto
    my Grand daughter Alice Walton one Long Oak Chest that
    stands in the Palour with all her Mother's Barbary Walton
    wearing apparell therein as is in the Inventory hereafter

    then it is my will that My Executor Henry Jackson
    shall enter upon the said Dwelling house and premises
    and shal keep possession thereof untill the aforesaid
    twenty pound and two Gunies apiece shall be paid
    and fully discharged.
    And Lastly I nominate and appoint Henry Jackson
    My Sole Executor of this my last will and Testament
    And I do hereby revoke all former Wills by me heretofore
    made. I do publish and declare this my last will and

19. Sarah's age was given as 64 at her burial on 1st September 1818 ⁽²⁹⁾, implying a birthdate in 1753/54. However her assumed baptism, as the daughter of John and Sarah, was on 11th July 1755. Hence her exact age isn't known.

    together with the Household Goods and Furniture
    therein and all other my Estate and Estates both
    Real and personal whatsoever and wheresoever
    and of what nature kind or tenure soever the
    same be To hold the same House and premises
    Estate and Estates Goods and Chattels and every
    part thereof with the Appurtances unto and
    To the only proper use and behoof of the said
    Sarah Walton her Heirs Executors Administrators
    and Assigns for ever according to the nature of
    such respective Estate or Estates whether Real or
    Personal But Subject and liable nevertheless to
    the payment of all my just Debts Funeral
