John Flint

1732 - 1789

John Flint was born in 1732 in Tideswell, the youngest (and only surviving) son of John and Grace, and was baptised there on 29th June ⁽¹⁾.

Like his father, he worked as a miner ⁽²⁾. He married Hannah Brocklehurst, who was 3 years his junior, at St John the Baptist's in Tideswell on 7th October 1755 ⁽²⁾. Their first child, John, was born the following year ⁽³⁾. Next came two daughters, Grace in 1759 ⁽⁴⁾, and Hannah in 1761 ⁽⁵⁾.

His father died in 1762 ⁽⁶⁾, making John the senior member of the Tideswell Flint family. The following year his next son Hugh was born ⁽⁷⁾, followed by Matthew in 1766 ⁽⁸⁾, and Thomas in 1769 ⁽⁹⁾. They had twin girls in 1772, Elizabeth and Sarah ⁽¹⁰⁾. Another daughter, Mary, followed the next year ⁽¹¹⁾. One of the twins, Sarah died in 1774 ⁽¹²⁾. His eldest son John died in a mining accident in 1776 ⁽¹³⁾. Finally his youngest child, also called John, was born in 1780 ⁽¹⁴⁾.

John died aged 57 at the end of 1789, and was buried in Tideswell on 8th December ⁽¹⁵⁾. He was survived by his wife Hannah by nearly 30 years ⁽¹⁶⁾!

• John was born in 1756 in Tideswell. He died, unmarried, aged 20 in a mining accident, and was buried in Tideswell on 3/11/1776.
• Grace was born in 1759 in Tideswell. In 1785 she married Thomas Stevenson, and they had three children, Sarah, William and Thomas. Her husband died in 1802, and she lived as a widow for 20 years, dying in 1822.
• Hannah was born in Tideswell in 1761. Nothing more is known of her.

• Matthew was born in Tideswell in 1766. He too was a miner. He married Jane Walton of Tideswell in 1784. (Four years later, his brother Hugh married Jane's sister Ann/Nancy). They had 9 children between 1785 and 1804; namely Ann, Joseph, Margaret, Matthew, Kitty, Jane, Richard, Elizabeth & Sarah. He died in 1823 aged 57.

• Elizabeth was born in Tideswell in 1772, the twin sister to Sarah. Nothing more is known of her.
• Sarah was born in Tideswell in 1772, the twin sister to Elizabeth. She died before her second birthday.
• Mary was probably born in Tideswell around 1773. She married Isaac Thornhill in 1795, and had eight children between then and 1816, namely Edward, John, Robert, Mary, George, Hannah, William & James. Sometime after then they moved to Ashton in Lancashire, where Isaac died in 1839, and Jane in 1840.
• John was born in Tideswell in 1780. He bucked the faily trend of mining, and joined the booming cotton industry, working first as a fustian cutter and later as a weaver. He married Elizabeth Nall of Tideswell at Christmas 1799 and they had two daughters, Margaret in 1801, and then Martha in in 1803, by which time they had moved to Great Hucklow. Sometime soon afterwards they moved to Manchester where they had another daughter Mary Ann in 1806. Elizabeth died in 1807, and he remarried Mary Middleton, also originally from Tideswell. He and Mary had a son Thomas in 1809, and then six daughters, starting with Elizabeth in about 1811, Ruth around the end of 1812, Mary in 1815, Anne about 1817, Hannah in the early 1820s and finally Ellen in 1827. He died in Ancoats in 1841 aged 60.

   (This appears to name John's wife as Grace, rather than Hannah, but I am taking it to be a mistake, as there are no other John Flints in Tideswell at the time who could have been married to a Grace, so the vicar, or whoever wrote it, presumably got confused between the name of the baby being baptised and its mother.)

11. A Mary Flint of Tideswell married there in 1795. Her baptism is not listed in the parish register, but her husband was born in 1775, and her burial in late 1840 gives her age as 67, so she must have been born about 1773. John and Hannah were the only Flints having children in Tideswell anywhere around that time, so she is almost certainly their daughter.
