Sarah Elizabeth (known as Sarah whilst a girl, and then Elizabeth later on as a married woman) was born in Great Longstone on 7th August 1882 ⁽¹⁾⁽⁸⁾, the only child of Charles and Sarah, although she had 7 older stepsisters and a stepbrother from her mother's first marriage. In the census of 1891 she was living with her parents, two stepsisters - Mary and Ethel, and Arnold, the son of a third stepsister Ellen ⁽²⁾. Her mother died in 1893 ⁽³⁾, and sometime between then and the next census in 1901, her father moved to Litton Slack, where she and him were living by then ⁽⁴⁾.

She married Harry Jackson at Tidewell on 24th November 1902 ⁽⁵⁾, and they settled in Litton ⁽⁶⁾. Their only daughter, Dorothy, was born in March 1905 ⁽⁶⁾, and their only son, Cyril, in May 1908 ⁽⁷⁾.

What happened next is unclear. Family tradition claims that she had an affair with a man called Luther Cartledge and her husband kicked her out. She is said to have died in, or soon after, childbirth (to Luther's daughter Iris), and been cremated as a pauper in Stockport ⁽⁷⁾. No evidence has been found to corroborate this.

Brief details of her children:

Dorothy was born in Litton in 1905. As a young woman she worked at the cotton mill, before marrying Victor Sheldon in 1925. Victor worked for the railway, so they initially had to move around quite a bit. Their only child Brenda was born whilst they living in Bugsworth. Eventually they moved back home and settled in Cressbrook. Victor died from TB in 1935, and Dorothy also suffered from the disease, but survived. She remained a widow for over 40 years, until, aged 73, she married a friend from her youth, Sam Haughty. She died in 1996, aged 90.
Cyril was born in Litton in 1908. He married a woman called Rosie, and died in 1951.

Information from living relatives. The fact that She had an illegitimate daughter Iris, with Luther Cartledge is well known by living relatives, but the date and place of Iris's birth is unknown, and no documentary trace of Elizabeth has been found after her daughter Dorothy's birth in 1905.
