Thomas's mark, on his will of 1800 ⁽²⁷⁾

Thomas was born in Chelmorton in 1730, the son of William and Alice ⁽¹⁾. He had two older brothers, Jospeh ⁽²⁾ and Benjamin ⁽³⁾, and an older sister Hannah ⁽⁴⁾. His mother died when he was just a year old ⁽⁵⁾. However his father was married again in a little under six months! ⁽⁶⁾ Thomas's eldest half brother John was born in 1734⁽⁷⁾, followed by Martha in 1736 ⁽⁸⁾ and William in 1738 ⁽⁹⁾. His older brother Benjamin died around his 18th birthday in 1745 ⁽¹⁰⁾, and his father in 1850 ⁽¹¹⁾.

Thomas married a woman called Martha and they lived in Flagg, where their first child Alice, was born in 1758 ⁽¹³⁾. She was followed by another daughter Mary in 1760 ⁽¹⁴⁾, although she only lived a few months ⁽¹⁵⁾. Another daughter Jane was born in 1761 ⁽¹⁶⁾, and then the eldest son, William followed in 1762 ⁽¹⁷⁾. He was followed by daughter Hannah in 1765 ⁽¹⁸⁾and son Thomas in 1767 ⁽¹⁹⁾.

Thomas's mother died in Februrary 1769 ⁽²⁰⁾. His daughter Martha was born later the same year ⁽²¹⁾, and then son Joseph two years later ⁽²²⁾, but he died aged just one ⁽²³⁾. Youngest daughter Anne was born in 1776 ⁽²⁴⁾, and finally youngest son George in 1780 ⁽²⁵⁾. One of his daughters, either Anne or Martha, died in 1779, and the other one sometime over the next twenty years ⁽²⁶⁾, before he wrote his will in the summer of 1800 ⁽²⁷⁾. In his will he leaves everything to his wife during her life, then his farm was left to his sons Thomas & George. The major bequest going to his second and third sons implies that had probably already given eldest son William his inheritance.

Thomas died in October 1808 ⁽²⁸⁾, and was buried in Chelmorton ⁽²⁹⁾. His wife survived him by a little over a year ⁽³⁰⁾.

• Alice was born in 1758 in Flagg. She married Matthew Coe, a sawyer from Manchester, in 1784. They settled in Manchester, and were still there in 1814. Nothing more is known of her.
• Mary was born in Flagg in 1860. She only lived a few months.
• Jane was probably born in 1761. She married Robert Barber Hopkins, a cooper from Flagg, in 1801. Her uncle William bequeathed £50 to her, along with her siblings, in his will of 1814, but then wrote a codicil the following year disinheriting just her (unfortunately there is no indication why). Nothing more is known of her.

• Hannah was born in Flagg in 1765. She married a man with the surname of either Coasne or Coape (the name is difficult to decipher - see her uncle William's will (ref: B/C/11/William Hodgkinson, Chelmorton, 1814 @ LRO), about 4 lines from the bottom of the first image), who died before 1814. Nothing is known of her after this time.
• Thomas was born in Flagg in 1767. He moved to a farm at Lowe in Hartington along with his bother George. He died in 1821.
• Martha was born in Flagg in 1769. She died sometime before 1800.
• Joseph was born in Flagg in 1771, but only lived for about 18 months.
• Ann was born in Flagg in 1776, but died sometime before 1800.
• George was born in Flagg in 1780. He married a woman called Martha and they initially lived in Flagg, where they had a daughter Martha. He then moved to Lowe in Hartington, where his brother Thomas lived - they may have worked the same farm. He was still there in 1851, when he had 257 acres of land but nothing later is known of him.

    This un-named daughter was probably either Anne or Martha, as both were seemingly dead by 1800 when Thomas wrote his will. The other one presumably dying sometime over the next 20 years
27. Will of Thomas Hodgkinson of Flagg (ref: B/C/11/Thomas Hodgkinson, Flagg, 1810 @ LRO) reads:
    In the name of God Amen, I Thomas Hodgkinson of Flagg in the Parish
    of Bakewell, & in the County of Derby, Farmer, being of sound & perfect mind
    and memory, and considering the uncertainty of this mortal life, do make
    and ordain this my last Will and Testament in manner & form following.
    First I give & bequeath to my wife Martha Hodgkinson the use of all my
    personal Estate whatsoever, for and during her natural life, and it is also
    my Will that she shall have the use of my Farm lying or situate at Flagg
    aforesaid & which I now rent under Thomas Gisborne Esq^r which favour
    I hope Mr Gisborne & his Steward will not refuse, and at her decease it
    is my Will that the said Farm shall be equally divided between my Two Sons
    Thomas and George. And with regard to my personal Estate after my
    Wife hath had the use of it during her natural life as before expressed,
    I give and bequeath all the said personal Estate whatsoever, that shall
    remain at my Wife's decease, to be equally divided amongst my six
    Children, Viz William, Thomas, George, Alice, Jane & Hannah, each of
    them to have an equal share thereof as before expressed. I also give to
    my Wife the use of my House where we now dwell & also the use of my
    Barn Shippen & Garden during her natural life, & after her decease I hereby
    give & devise the said House Barn Shippen & Garden to my Brother
    William Hodgkinson of Chelmorton to him his Heirs & assigns for ever in
    trust to sell the said Housing & Garden, and to divide the moneys arising from
    the sale thereof equally amongst my Six Children before named, as soon as
    possible can be done after my Wife's decease, unless One or more of my said
    Children shall agree with the rest to take the said Housing & Garden in lieu of their share
    or shares of my personal Estate, which if that can be done the said House, Barn
    Shippen & Garden needs not be sold as aforesaid. And lastly, I do hereby
    appoint my wife to be sole executrix of this my last Will & Testament,
    In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand & seal theis 26 day of
    September, in the Fortieth Year of the reign of our sovereign Lord King George
    the third, & in the year of our Lord 1800.

28. Probate of Thomas Hodgkinson of Flagg (ref: B/C/11/Thomas Hodgkinson, Flagg, 1810 @ LRO) reads:
    At Lichfield 27^th January 1810 - Before the
    Reverend Charles Buckeridge DD Canon
    Residentiary
    
    Appeared personally George Hodgkinson and suggested
    that Thomas Hodgkinson late of Flagg in the Parish of
    Bakewell in the county of Derby and Jurisdiction of the
    Dean and Chapter of the Cathederal Church of Lichfield
    Farmer deceased duly Made and Executed his last Will
    and Testament in writing and thereof appointed his
    wife Martha Hodgkinson the Sole Executrix
    who died before she had taken upon herself the Probate
    and Execution of the said Will and he further suggessed
    that he was the natural and lawful son and one of
    the Residuary Legatees named in the said will of the
    said Thomas Hodgkinson deceased Wherefore he prayed
    Letters of Administration of the Goods and personal
    Estate of the said deceased with his said last will and
    Testament annexed to be granted to him Which the
    Surrogate aforesaid upon his taking the usual oath
    and giving good security Decreed as prayed
    
    Testator died                               The said George Hodgkinson being duly sworn
    in October 1808                          Also that the deceaseds personal Estate is not
