1868 - 1951
| Father | Robert Bingham |
| Mother | Hannah Goodwin |
| Husband | William Sheldon |
| Children | Margaret, John Robert, Victor Arnold, Edward |
Mary Jane was born on 10th April 1868 in Litton, the only child of Robert & Hannah, and baptised in Tideswell just over 2 weeks later (1)(19). Sometime fairly soon after her birth, the family moved to Cressbrook (2). She appeared twice in the census of 1871, once at home with her parents in Cressbrook (2), and also with her grandmother Elizabeth Bingham, and uncle William, in Litton(3). She was obviously staying with her grandmother on the night of the 2nd April - indeed being an only child, its likely that her mother worked full time at Cressbrook Mill, and that Mary Jane spent a fair amount of time with her only living grandpanent.
Sometime in the 1870s, her parents and her moved to Ashton-under-Lyne, and were there at the time of the 1881 census (along with her uncle William and her grandmother, next door) (4). However by the next census of 1891 they had moved back to Cressbrook (5).
On 27th June 1892, she married William Sheldon from next door but one in Cressbrook, at Tideswell church (6). Her father died in December that same year (07).
Her first child, Margaret, was born in July 1893 (8), and their next, John Robert, in March 1895 (9). Her mother died in 1898 (10). Their third child, Victor Arnold, was born in February 1900 (11), but for some reason wasn't baptised for almost a year (12). At the time of the census in March 1901, her husband William was lodging in Hasland in Chesterfield, working as a coal miner (13), whilst Mary Jane and the family were still in Cressbrook (14). It seems that this arrangement didn't last long though, as by the time their last child Edward was baptised the following January, William was was back in Cressbrook working as a warehouseman at Litton Mill (15).
Her husband William died aged 59 in April 1930 (16). Mary Jane survived him by 21 years, dying at her daughter Margaret's home in Bakewell on 31st March 1951 (17).
