John Marshall

1777 - 1853

John was born in Gratton ⁽²⁸⁾, on the outskirts of Elton, in early 1777, the son of Charles and Rebecca, and baptised in Elton on 2nd March ⁽¹⁾. He had two older brothers, James and Jonathan, and an older sister Hannah ⁽²⁾. A younger sister Mary was born when he was two ⁽³⁾, followed by another one called Martha when he was five ⁽⁴⁾. Finally a younger brother, Charles, was born in early 1788 ⁽⁵⁾.

Even though it is not explicitly stated until later in his life ^{(16)(18)(21)(23)(24)(27)(28)(29)(31)}, it is probable that he was a lead miner from his teenage years. At the age of 20, he married Hannah Prime ⁽⁶⁾, and they settled in Elton ^{(10)(23)(27)(28)(29)(31)}. Six months or so later, their first son, Charles, was born ⁽⁷⁾. Another son Roger followed in 1799⁽⁸⁾, then James in 1801. For some reason James (and only James) was baptised twice, first in Elton ⁽⁹⁾, then about 8 weeks later in Winster ⁽¹⁰⁾, where John's wife Hannah originally came from ⁽²⁸⁾.

His son Charles died in 1803 ⁽¹¹⁾, and then he had two daughters, Mary in 1804 ⁽¹²⁾, and Sarah in 1807 ⁽¹³⁾. Another son John was born in 1809 ⁽¹⁴⁾, then his daughter Mary died in 1811 ⁽¹⁵⁾. When his next son was born in 1814, he re-used the name Charles for him ⁽¹⁶⁾, no doubt keen to pass on his father's name. His next son Abraham was born in 1816 ⁽¹⁷⁾, followed by youngest daughter Hannah in 1819 ⁽¹⁸⁾.

His father died later that year ⁽¹⁹⁾, and John was left £20, along with shares in a mine by the name of "Fill Barns" ⁽²⁰⁾.

He had a son Daniel in 1822 ⁽²¹⁾, then in 1824 his mother died ⁽²²⁾. He had another son Jonathan in 1825 ⁽²³⁾, before his final child Henry was born in 1828 ⁽²⁴⁾. His daughter Hannah died the following May ⁽²⁵⁾, and just a few months later his youngest son Henry died, just after his first birthday ⁽²⁶⁾.

By the time of the 1841 census, all his children, except sons Charles, Daniel and Jonathan, had left home ⁽²⁷⁾; and by the next in 1851, he and his wife were living alone ⁽²⁸⁾.

John died on 3rd January 1853 ⁽²⁹⁾, and was buried 3 days later ⁽³⁰⁾. His wife died a couple of years later ^(31)(32).

• Charles was born in Elton in 1798. He died aged five.
• Roger was born in Elton in 1799. He married Mary Shirt from Hope, and they settled there, where they had 6 children - Hannah, Benjamin, Stephen, Stephen (after the first one died as an infant), Charles and Fanny. They then moved to Hyde in Cheshire in the mid 1830s, where they had 2 more children - John and Mary Ann. By 1851 they had moved to Sheffield, and to Handsworth by 1861. After Mary's death around 1866, Roger moved back to Sheffield where he lived with his daughter Mary Ann and her family. He died in 1872.
• James was born in Elton in 1801. Nothing more is known of him.
• Mary was born in Elton in 1804, but died aged just six.
• Sarah was born in Elton in 1807. She married Samuel Smith in 1827, and they settled in Kirk Ireton, whre they had four children - Hannah, Mary, Sarah and Samuel. They briefly moved back to Elton in the late 1830s, where they had three more children - Anne, Mary and Sarah, before moving to Belper in the late 1840s. They were still there in 1861 but nothing later is known of them.

• Charles was born in Elton in 1814. He worked there as a miner and married Jane Hadfield in 1841. They had a daughter Sarah Jane later that year, but then both Sarah Jane, and her mother died in 1842. Charles remarried the following year, to Anne Joule, and they had two daughters, Sarah and Emma. Nothing is known of them after 1851.
• Abraham was born in 1816 in Elton. He married a woman called Hannah, and they had three children - John, Mary Ann & Abraham. Abraham went bling sometime in the 1850s and so had to stop mining and become a coal higgler. He died in 1882.
• Hannah was born in 1819 in Elton. She died there in 1829.
• Daniel was born in Elton in 1822. He married Sarah Jackson from Winster and they settled there, where they had 12 children - Agnes, Adeline, Henry, Maria, James, another James (after death of first one), Edwin, Herbert, another James (after death of second one), Albert, William and another Adeline (following death of first one). Daniel worked as lead miner all his life, till he died in 1867.
• Jonathan was born in Elton in about 1825. He worked there as a klead miner, and married Hannah Jackson in the early 1840s. They had four children - William, Alfred, Henry and John, before Hannah died in 1852. Jonathan left Elton in the 1860s and moved to Masfield. He returned home later in life, and died in Bakewell Workhouse in 1886.
• Henry was born in Elton in 1828, but died just after his first birthday.

    In the Name of God Amen. I Charles
    Marshall of Elton in the County of Derby
    Miner, do hereby make, publish, & declare
    this to be my last Will and Testament
    in manner & form following. First, it is my
    will & desire that all my just Debts, Funeral
    & testamentary Charges & Expenses be paid
    and discharged as soon as may be after my
    decease. Also I give, devise and bequeath
    all that my Freehold Messuage, or Dwelling
    house wherein I now live situate in Elton
    together with the Garden, Coalhouse, Stable,
    and other appurtenances thereto belonging
    to my dear wife Rebecca Marshall to reside
    therein or otherwise to receive the Rents &
    profits thereof during the term of her natu-
    ral life, and immediately after her decease
    I give & devise the same Dwelling House
    with its appurtenances to my son Charles
    Marshall, his heirs and assigns for ever.
    Also I give and bequeath to my said Wife
    during the term of her natural life, all
    my Household Furniture which shall be
    found in my House at my decease; and after
    her death, I give the said Furniture to my Son
    Charles. Also I give & devise all that piece or
    parcel of land belonging to me, situate upon
    Elton Common, & containing about half an
    acre, to my said Wife during the term of her
    natural life, and after her decease I give &
    devise the same to my son Jonathan his
    heirs and assigns for ever. And as concern-
    ing all my personal Estate and Effects of what
    kind soever I give and bequeath the same, with
    the profits and interest arising therefrom, to my
    said Wife, during the term of her natural life
    and to be disposed of by her at her death, as
    she shall think proper, except as follows, namely
    out of the said personal Estate & Effects, I give &
    bequeath to my eldest son James Marshall the
    sum of ten pounds. I also give to my Daughter
    Hannah Beeby the sum of ten Pounds; to my
    son Jonathan the sum of twenty pounds; to
    my son John twenty pounds; and to mt Daugh-
    ter Martha Marsden the sum of twenty Pounds:
    which said sums of money I direct shall be paid
    to my said five Children their heirs & assigns res-
    pectively within two months after my said Wife's
    decease, or as soon afterwards as my Money at
    Interest can be called in. Also I give to my
    son Jonathan all my shares of the Lead Mine
    called Blacklow; and also to my son John
    my shares of a Mine called Fill Barns - and
    with respect to the lnd which I now hold under
    lease from the Rev^d George Mason, my will
    is that my Son James Marshall shall conti-
    nue to hold after my death that part of the
    said land which he now occupies consisting
    of about seven acres: and that my said Wife
    shall occupy the remainder consisting of about
    eleven acres during her life, & after her death
    that the said eleven acres shall be occupied by
    my son Charles. - and lastly I do hereby
    nominate and appoint Mr Robert Alsop of
    Gratton, & my said Wife Rebecca, to be Executor
    & Executrix of this my last Will & testament.

    the year of our lord 1819.
