Thomas Gilbert

1790 - 1870

Thomas was born in Tideswell in 1790, the son of Joseph & Martha, and baptised at St John the Baptist's church there on 12th September ⁽¹⁾. He had 3 (or possibly 4) older brothers: Henry, Joseph, and Anthony (the eldest of his parents sons, Samuel, may well have been dead by then) ⁽²⁾. His only younger brother, Ralph, was born the following year ⁽³⁾. His father died sometime around his third birthday ⁽⁴⁾.

He worked, like most of his family, as a weaver ⁽⁵⁾. In October 1811 he married, an already heavily pregnant ⁽⁶⁾, Tabitha Mosley ⁽⁵⁾, and their first son, Joseph was born a couple of months later ⁽⁶⁾. Their next son, Mellor Mosley, followed in 1814 ⁽⁷⁾, then a daughter, Jane in 1817 ⁽⁸⁾. However Jane only lived for about a year ⁽⁹⁾. By the time his next son, John Mosley, was born in 1819, he had become a victualler ⁽¹⁰⁾, of the "The Sun" ⁽¹¹⁾. He had another daughter Marianne in 1822 ⁽¹²⁾, but she also only survived for just over a year ⁽¹³⁾. He then gave up selling beer and returned to weaving, which he was doing by the time of his next son, Ralph's, birth in 1824 ⁽¹⁴⁾. He had two more sons, Francis in 1828 ⁽¹⁵⁾, and Samuel in 1830 ⁽¹⁶⁾, before a final daughter, Martha, in 1834 ⁽¹⁷⁾.

His mother died in 1840 ⁽¹⁸⁾. At the time of the 1841 ⁽¹⁹⁾ census he and Tabitha were living on Sheffield Road with 6 of their children (Joseph having married a few years earlier), and he was still listed as a weaver. Sometime over the next few years he became a weaver's agent, and was listed as such in 1846 ⁽²⁰⁾, and then again in the 1851 census, by which time only three children were still living at home ⁽²¹⁾.

Sometime around the end of the 1850s he appears to have given up being an agent, and returned to doing the actual weaving ^(23)(25). His wife died in Janauary 1861 ⁽²⁴⁾, so by the time of the next census later that year, only his last unmarried son, Ralph, was still living with him ⁽²⁵⁾.

Thomas died on 6th January 1870 ⁽²⁶⁾, and was buried in Tideswell ⁽²⁷⁾, where he had spent all his life.

• Mellor Mosley was born in Tideswell in 1814. He worked there as a weaver. When he was 27 he married Rachel Dawson and they settled in Tideswell, initially near the church,and later in Townend. They had 3 sons: James, Alfred & Harold, and 3 daughters: Henrietta, Martha Ann & Charlotte. He died in 1881 and his wife survived him by 4 years.
• Jane was born in 1817, and died in 1818.
• John Mosley was born in Tideswell in 1819. He worked there as a weaver. He married a woman called Elizabeth (possibly Elizabeth Castle), and they had three children, Jane, John and Esther. John died aged just 38. His widow went on to remarry, and move to Barnsley with the children.
• Marianne was born in 1822, and died the following year.
• Ralph was born in 1824 in Tideswell. He initially worked as a weaver, but later in life became a lead miner. He was the last of his siblings to marry, staying at home until his father died in 1870. Within a few moths of his father's death he married Mary Bramwell. They remained in Tideswell, but didn't have any children, as they were too old by the time they married. He died aged 56 in 1881. His widow survived him by 16 years.
• Francis was born in 1828 in Tideswell. Initially he worked as a weaver, but became a lead miner fairly soon after his marriage to Ann Sellers in 1854. They had (at least) 2 daughters, Elizabeth and Maud, before Ann died sometime in the early-mid 1860s. Francis then moved to Chesterfield where he worked as a coal miner. He remarried to a widow called Mary Dickinson in 1865. He was still living in Hasland on the outskirts of Chesterfield in 1881, but nothing later is known of him.
• Samuel was born in Tideswell in 1830. In 1851 he was still there working as a weaver, and living with his parents, but nothing later is known of him.
• Martha was born in Tideswell in 1834. In 1858 she married Frederick Leech, a chemist, and they had two sons John & Joseph, then three daughters Ann, Martha and Mary. She died aged just 38 in 1872. Frederick remarried and lived for another 20 years.
