Elias Bingham

Elias was born about 1771 ^(m), possibly in or around Little Hucklow ⁽ⁿ⁾. Nothing is known of his early life yet....however...

By 1792 he was living in the parish of Tideswell and working as a fustian weaver. He married Elizabeth Redfern at St John the Baptist's on 24th June 1792 ^(a), and they may have initially lived in Little Hucklow, at the time their eldest son Thomas was born the following year ^(b). Soon after this they were living in Litton, and their eldest daughter Sarah was born there in 1794 ^(c). Another daughter Nancy followed in late 1796 ^(d), but then eldest daughter Sarah died of smallpox in the outbreak of spring 1797 ^(e). Their next child was another daughter, Mary, born in 1799 ^(f). The year 1801 got off to a happy start with the birth of son George ^(g). However within a month or so of this, daughter Mary died ^(h), and then within another month of that, son George also died ⁽ⁱ⁾. Their youngest son Matthew was born in 1802 ^(j), and their youngest daughter Elizabeth in 1805 ^(k).

Elias's wife Elizabeth died in Litton early in 1811 ^(l), aged just 39, but Elias lived for another 16 years, dying at Litton Dale in 1827 aged 56. He was buried in Tideswell on 7th June ^(m).

• Thomas was born in Little Hucklow in 1793, but his parents moved to Litton when he was an infant. When he was 21 he married Elizabeth Harrison, and they had a son George and a daughter Margaret. However when their third son William was born there were obviously complications, as both the baby and mother were dead within a fortnight. He remarried 3 years later, to Ann Harrison (she doesn't appear to have been a close relative of his late wife, as could have been the case to help look after the children), and had a further ten children - Jane, Matthew, Elizabeth, Robert, Martha, Esther, Elias, Ann, Joseph and Ellen. They then moved to Droylsden in Lancashire in the 1840s. He is believed to have died in the 1850s.
• Sarah was born in Litton in 1794. She died at about two and half years old.
• Nancy was born in Litton in 1796. Nothing more is known of her.
• Mary was born in Litton in 1799. She died at the age of two.
• George was born in Litton in 1801. He only lived for two months

• Elizabeth was born in Litton in 1805, and appears to have stayed there all her life. When she was 25 she married William Williamson and they had two children - Elias and Sarah, but they only lived for 16 days and 3 months respectively. Her husband William died in 1845. 9 years later she married John Sheldon. John died in 1872, and Elizabeth lived for another 14 years, dying at the age of 81 in 1886.

   The location Littlehucklow may or may not apply to this entry, as two entries are squeezed into one line of the register and its unclear which one this aplies to.

   There are eight burial entries in the parish register between 25th March and 24th April 1797, and all of them are for children who died of smallpox - 6 from Litton and 2 from Tideswell.

2. He lived in Little Hucklow immediately afterwards, but at time of his marriage he was said to be "of the parish of Tideswell". Numerous entries for residents of Little Hucklow appear in Tideswell parish registers, but as far as I can tell it was officially in Hope parish, so his baptism may have taken place there. There is a will of an Elias Bingham of Little Hucklow dated 1790 which mentions his son Elias. However the son in the will appears to have been about 10 years younger than this Elias (via mention of an apprenticeship).
