Elizabeth Ridiard
1606 - 1659
Elizabeth was born in 1606, the daughter of George Ridiard, and baptised at All Saints Youlgreave on 7th December
(1). She had two elder brothers John (2) and William (3). In 1909 her younger sister Catherine was born (4).
She married Thomas Birds, at All Saints in Youlgreave, on 27th November 1628 (5). It is believed that they lived in Elton after their marriage, and had at least 5 children there over the next 15 years - son Francis, and daughters Clemens, Elizabeth, Anne and Mary (6).
Her eldest brother, John, died in 1630 (7), and he mentioned her in his will, but didn't leave her anything, rather he left half his farm to his father, for him to divide between John's siblings as he saw fit (8). Her father died in 1639 (10) and left her ten pounds, along with five pounds for her husband and 2 sheep for each of her children (11).
By 1643, and the baptism of her next son Thomas, the family were back in Youlgreave parish (12). Next came another son George, born in 1645 (13), but he only lived for about 4 months (14). Their youngest son John was born in 1647 (15), and their youngest daughter Catherine in 1650 (16).
In 1656 her father in law died (17), and her husband was the main benificiary in his will (18).
Elizabeth died in in 1659 and was buried in Youlgreave on 21st May (19). Her husband survived her by another 7 years (20).
Brief details of her children:
- Clemens was probably born in Elton in the early 1630s. She married William Gladwin in Youlgreave on 8th May 1652.
She was mentioned in her grandfather's will of 1655 (where he called her Clement Birds, rather than using her married
name, but there are no other Clemens Birds that could have married in 1652, so this must have been her, and her
grandfather's will is in error). No further mention of her of William is found in Youlgreave parish register, so they
must have lived elsewhere.
- Francis was probably born in Elton in the late 1630s. He was mentioned in his grandfather's will of 1655 when he
was still under 21, and is likely to be the Francis who, with wife Maria, had a son Thomas baptised in 1665. Nothing
else is known of him.
- Elizabeth was probably born in Elton in the 1630s. She was mentioned in her grandfather's will of 1655, but
nothing more is known of her.
- Anne was probably born in Elton in the 1630s. She was mentioned in her grandfather's will of 1655. She married
William Buxton in Youlgreave on 1st June 1659. No other mention of them is found in the Youlgreave parish registers,
so they probably lived elsewhere after marriage.
- Mary has her own page
- Thomas was born at about the beginning of 1643 in Youlgreave. He was mentioned in his grandfather's will of 1655,
but nothing more is known of him.
- George was born in Youlgreave in 1645, but died the following January.
- John was born in Youlgreave in 1647. He was mentioned in his grandfather's will of 1655. Nothing more is known of
him.
- Catherine was born in Youlgreave in 1650, and mentioned in her grandfather's will of 1655. Nothing more is known
of her.

[Marriages 1628] Thomas Birds & Elizabeth Ridyard Novemb: 27
- After their marriage, they are not found mentioned in any parish registers until the baptism of their son Thomas in 1643 (xx). However Thomas is described as being "of Elton" in an agreement of 1636 (9), so they lived there at that time, and more than likely all the time from their marriage up to sometime prior to the baptism of their son Thomas. The parish registers of Elton do not survive from this period, but the will of Thomas's father Francis. lists all of Thomas and Elizabeth's surviving children, including 5 that were not baptised in Youlgreave, so the most likely scenario is that these 5 children (Francis, Clement, Elizabeth, Anne and Mary) were baptised in Elton.
